I'm planning on buying my daughter a new laptop for Christmas.
Right now it's between these two, any opinions?

That's an easy one man. The Acer is sporting a radeon 7670M, while the HP is using on board.
On the other hand, the HP has a slightly faster processor than the Acer, but if your daughter ever plans on playing anything other than a game of solitaire, the Acer is a better buy overall.
That's my general feelings too if it was for me. I was weighing build quality too, the HP has a metal body and is thin and good looking.
But you never know, maybe she'd get into gaming if she had a system that could.
Ha, tell me how you get her to do it, i've been trying to get my wife into gaming for the past 4 years. No telling how much money i've wasted on stupid games that were played for 30 minutes.
To be honest with you, I've never been overly impressed with HP's build quality on their consumer products. On their high end stuff, they are solid, but their cheaper items just always seemed really... cheap. Acer on the other hand, I really have no experience with save for their monitors, so I can't tell you much there. I just know i'd rather have a dedicated graphics card over on board any day.
Here is an Asus with a Core i3 and a SSD cache drive w/HDD, 4gb of RAM. It's thin and Light and it runs Windows 8.

I worked for Acer years ago and the quality was garbage. It has probably gotten better since then though.
I've never been a fan of HP. I have a scar from an HP as well lol (Cut my hand on a laptop...)
