See this Atlantic article on the case for abolishing patents (with a link to the working paper, commissioned by that radical institution, the Federal Reserve Bank of Saint Louis). Article I, Section 8(8) of the US Constitution provides that : «[The Congress shall have power ...] To promote the progress of science and useful arts, by securing for limited times to authors and inventors the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries;», but in recent years patents have been rather mainly used to stifle «the progress of science and useful arts», i e, innovation, than to promote them. A different method to protect the interests of «authors and inventors» (which is not at all identical to the interests of the megacorporations) will have to be found ; the present system of patents, design registrations, and copyrights is nothing other than a disaster....
