From my house on my smart phone I can see 2wire691, 315, 798, 480 secured WIFI all of which I am pretty sure are network wifi/hard connections and I am pretty sure there Google live cams. So it would seem to me Google has a large amount of connection points already in place. I also know I can see various ones in from my mothers WIFI router I set up for her, and my old address as well they were there although thinner at that time.
Anybody know if people like myself with GNU/Linux installed on our machines will be able to avail ourselves of this service ?...

This is an interesting move. A mobile OS vendor who is paying for free WiFi for any user BUT his direct competitor.
WiFi is an interesting space these days. Telcos are getting into it, as well as other players such as transportation companies and city councils. It will be interesting to see how this one ends. There is also another service called Wavespot that don't just provide free Internet at business locations, but also help them market their services over Social Media.
