GoDaddy Goes Down, Lone Anonymous Hacker Claims Credit

On Monday around mid-morning, a lone hacker claiming association to hacker collective Anonymous attacked GoDaddy.com, taking down many of the personal and small business websites that GoDaddy hosts.

GoDaddy posted some vague Tweets throughout the day, assuring its customers that it was aware of and working on the problem, and the following was posted on the official company website:

At 10:25 am PT, GoDaddy.com and associated customer services experienced intermittent outages. Services began to be restored for the bulk of affected customers at 2:43 pm PT. At no time was any sensitive customer information, such as credit card data, passwords or names and addresses, compromised. We will provide an additional update within the next 24 hours. We want to thank our customers for their patience and support.

By Monday evening, GoDaddy stated on its Twitter feed that most hosted sites were back up, and most importantly, that no customer data was compromised.


The attack was carried out by a hacker named AnonymousOwn3r who bragged on his Twitter feed about it all day and clearly stated that he acted alone; apparently, none of the credit for angering throngs of site owners and users can be given to the larger Anonymous group.
