Micron Has a Fully Functional DDR4 Module, Volume Production Slated for late 2012

I have been wondering when they would move up from DDR3 the thing that baffles me on this is why not move up to DDR5 as it would have multiple benefits. First it has been used and made more efficient over several years now in video cards. DDR5 is also of course faster more heat efficient, energy efficient, and performance efficient than DDR4 is so why put out DDR4 over DDR5 as the next machine standard memory?????

Maybe its a cost thing? Money, die size, motherboard interface space? Dunno. However, i do know that my next rig will be a DDR4 rig, and yes i can wait for 1.5 yrs.

regarding the ddr5 cost, i've just read a gtx680 with 4gb ram - it's 80$ more expensive. say custom cooler is 10-20$ (card is on reference clocks), so i guess that 1gb ddr5 = ~40$. of course, it may be completely wrong assumption

You seem to be confusing DDR SDRAM and GDDR. GDDR is RAM specifically designed for graphics cards; GDDR5 is actually based on DDR3 SDRAM. So, DDR5 SDRAM doesn't actually exist, yet.

There is no DDR5. GDDR5 is actually DDR3 tuned for use in video applications.

Faster memory is good but to some degree I feel this is a way for the memory industry to push their profits back up considering they are at all time lows with DDR3

I would agree with you, but when was DDR3 introduced? 3 years ago I think, so it was about time for memory to move to the next gen, yes?
