A little over two weeks ago, Best Buy revealed plans to shutter 50 U.S. "big box" brick-and-mortar retail locations as part of a larger cost cutting initiative expected to save the company $800 million by fiscal 2015. At the time, the mega electronics chain didn't specify which exact locations would be getting the boot, but has now made that list public.

So far this year, Best Buy has closed down a store in Kansas City, Missouri and another in Scottsdale, Arizona, and has notified five Twin Cities stores and a one in San Antonio of plans to close them down later this year. That leaves 42 stores left on death row, which are listed below. States that will be hit the hardest include California (seven closures), Illinois (six closures), and Minnesota (five closures).

"This was not an easy decision to make. We chose these stores carefully, and are working to ensure the impact to our employees will be as minimal as possible, while serving all customers in a convenient and satisfying way," Best Buy said in a statement. "But we also recognize the impact this news has on the people who deserve respect for the contributions they have made to our business.

"We will be working to help these employees find other positions inside Best Buy. If they don’t find new positions, or if they choose not to work at a different location, a transition including severance packages will be available."

Best Buy expects to close nearly all 42 doomed locations by May 12, 2012. The three that will survive a little longer will be closed down later this summer, Best Buy said.

This is horrible and I hope that everyone is able to get another job. Hopefully they get a nice severance package.

I don't expect the Best Buy near me to close since it has great location in Tempe and is always full of people. I feel bad for all of those that will have to relocate and lose their jobs :(

Darn. My local one is staying open.

I'm not sure if closing a bunch of stores is a good long-term solution to their real problems though. Is there really not enough business in these areas to justify a store, or are they not being competitive with other stores in the area? You would think their size would give them a leg-up in pricing. :\

This kinds of downsizing is a tacit acknowledgement that management is either incapable of handling an organization of their original size, or has been making poor decisions about where to build stores.  But there's no doubt that this will scare the remaining stores into trying to upsell as much product as possible to justify their existence - making management look successful while making more BestBuy customers feel ripped off.

LLeCompte I doubt very many in a BB retail location will get any severance package at all (maybe full managers). There are 2 in GA but I can see why they would close as at least one of them (Loganville) is surrounded within 10 miles with other BB stores as well as other electronics/Media retail locations. The other one at the in Fayetteville I cannot really see as an issue as I am sure there is one in Union City and Riverdale both most likely which if you map it are less than an inch away and therefore in close proximity. BB is one of the largest retailers of there type in the Atlanta metro area. We do have private ones as well as HHGregg, Fry's, Micro Center, Walmart, and Target, Costco, BJ's, Sams etc etc.

I really hate to see people lose their jobs but come on, this was inevitable. Looks like all 50 in SD are safe. It really reminds me of blockbuster.

Now you're just mashing it!

lol... I used to go there occasionally because there was one across the street from my office building... but I was never too keen on them either.

If I don't need something quick, NewEgg is my go-to place. If I want it quick, or there's any chance in hades that I might need to return it, I'll drive down to Fry's.

Looking like Utah will be unaffected! whew! This does suck badly! but best buy had it coming! Amazon and Costco all have cheaper deals and better service arrangement's! They started out decent and changed so much that they are losing! I really like to see Bestbuy stick around!
