MSI today unveiled its new CX70 and CR70 17.3-inch multimedia laptops with Nvidia GeForce 600 series discrete mobile graphics and support for Intel's new generation Core i processors (read: mobile Ivy Bridge), along with cinema-level SRS sound and native SuperSpeed USB 3.0 support.

Details are fairly light on the specific SKUs MSI will offer, but in general, the CX70 and CR70 will feature:
  • DDR3 support up to 1600MHz
  • 1366x768 screen resolution
  • GeForce 610M, GT620M, GT630M, and GT635 graphics options
  • HDMI and VGA output
  • 2.5-inch 500GB/640GB/720GB SATA hard drive
  • DVD burner
  • HDMI 1.4; D-Sub; USB 3.0 x 2; USB 2.0 x 2; Mic/Headphone; GbE LAN; 5-in-1 card reader
  • 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi; Bluetooth v4.0
  • HD webcam
  • 6-cell battery
  • Windows 7 Home Premium

The new laptops are part of MSI's Classic series, a breed of stylish notebooks built for general purpose multimedia chores. It is, however, a little odd that the 17.3-inch panels will only support a 1366x768 resolution instead of rolling with Full HD 1080p.

No word yet on price or availability.

With you on this one, Paul - those specs look nice, but a resolution of 1366 x 768 px on a 17.3" screen would certainly be a deal breaker for me. MSI (and other notebook producers) should be going in the other direction !...

Thanks for checking this out, LLazar ! I had looked for this machine on our cheif product-search website here in Sweden, but since it wasn't being marketed here - and still isn't, for that matter - found nothing. In any event, with a 1600 x 900 screen, the CX70 immediately becomes more interesting. I note that even the CR70, which has an Ivy Bridge i5 processor, also supports a panel with a max resolutin of 1600 x 900 pixels. Looking forward to seeing them here in Sweden !...
