I have an FX-4170 CPU now and I use a NZXT Havik-140 cooler with it. This keeps my temps nice and low.

So yeah, you can get really good results with the proper Air cooling setup.

Was just about going to test the NZXT Havik 140 from HH Labor Day win rig with the FX-8150 on the Asus Sabertooth mainboard but thought the better of it when seeing the possibility of shorting the mainboard with some minor issues concerning the Havik AMD installation at the time..

By the way Neil what mainboard you got that FX-4170 on ?

I have it in a Sapphire Pure Black 990FX.

It's perfectly stable at stock settings, but it craps itself if you try to OC it at all. Even a tiny OC blows it out of the water.

I'm very disappointed with it.

But I have my eye on an ASRock Board.  I'm saving up for it now.

The reason that I like it is that it has two X16 PCI-E slots on it that both will work at X16 speeds ~at the same time~ in crossfire. (not @ 8X by 8X)

It's made well and geared for a good OC too.

yeah too bad that the Sapphire board  is not delivering the goods for you .Did not have an overwhelming experience [not all the good] with a  Sapphire P67 Black something or other board . I got from somewhere else a while back .

oh well

just have to ask if you did try some different memory when performance tuning that FX-4170. ?

yeah I recall you having some really good luck with ASRock mainboards and customer support and that sure looks like a very good choice for what you are looking for.  let us know how it works out for you.

4-Mushkin Blackline 1600MHz.

4-Kingston Hyper-X 1600Mhz

4-GSKill Sniper 1600MHz.

4-Mushkin Redline 2133MHz.

4-GSKill Ripjaws-X 2133MHz.

All of them are 4GB sticks (I have four of each of them) and all  are new or close to it. Tried two and four sticks combinations on the board with no change.

All of these sticks work at stock and faster speeds in my other systems. I tried 3 SeaSonic and 1 ThermalTake power supplies and got the same results with them all.

Tried changing voltages and manually setting timings too. It either doesn't boot, or it boots with the memory running at 1333MHz only. Can't even get stock speeds from the memory.

The board is stable at stock speeds 4,200MHz, (except for the memory running slow) and gaming is spot on with it too.

I plan to sell it off as soon as I can.

The TPC 812 is a pretty good cooler but the Phantek is a beast... You may need to add a little bit extra thermal paste though :)

I agree about that Phantek cooler,.....it beat the Noctua NDH14 in a lot of tests. It has a better look than the Noctua too.

I saw it for $79 bucks on the Egg. That's a lot less than the Noctua cooler is.

@omegadraco yep no doubt the CM tPC 812 beta sample I had for testing was a tad 'rough  and several others seemed to also add bit more than normal TIM. during the testing.Lapped  the heatsink after the testing and works a few degrees better with the Notuca NT-H1 .

Very nice kit as well and has the extra fan clips included.

Those 140mm Phantek fans go for $22 + /-  a pop

@realneil thank for getting back about testing that Sapphire AMD Black with all those very nice memory kits. Pretty sure you will have a real good selection for your upcoming build with the FX-4170.

Those are all of the memory sticks that I had on hand here in the house before I gave up trying to make that motherboard sing opera. (it's stuck on nursery rhymes)

I saved the four sticks of Mushkin Redline 2133MHz for the next AMD motherboard that I buy.

I plan to sell the Sapphire Pure Black and a Phenom-II 980 Black CPU to someone who will not be overclocking their rig.

This FX-4170 runs pretty cool with the NZXT Havik 140 cooler on it. It's going to be a keeper.

You guys sure have won a lot of nice gear. I've entered for hundreds of memory kits, never won even one. Still waiting for my first win this year and I'm not even just talking hardware...

@realneil yeah man I was eyeballing those tasty Mushkin Redline 2133MHz mem sticks yesterday afternoon during the Bears Game lol :) The mem sticks I have currently in the FX 8150 are these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231455  pretty good deal on those now [ btw did not win those]

yeah sometimes folks can get lucky. The mem sticks I had won earlier this year from an MSI contest are these GVP38GB1600C9DC kit from Geil http://www.geil.com.tw/products/showSpec/id/273

They had several winners and we received somewhat different packages of stuff like MSI mousepads and some swaggy stuff which is pretty cool.! Nice  experience with Geil memory tried them in a few different setups to check them out a bit and they appear to be pretty flexible and very decent.

REally hope you get some luck and can share some wins

Best of Luck to you

I like the low profile they're rockin'.

Sometimes you need RAM that's not too tall if other RAM interferes with your CPU cooler fitting properly.

When I was using DDR-2 memory, Geil was one of the companies that I used for my builds. They make quality stuff.

This Corsair K90 Mechanical Keyboard was my last win.

Yeah, but there are only so many "hoops" I'm willing to jump thru to enter these things.  That SSD Review guy is pushing the limit for me.  Next thing he'll be asking for is a copy of your birth certificate, photo ID, passport or a DNA sample.

Yeah, just realized that. What a crock.
