Unfortunately I have been hit with the plague that a lot of I-Phone 4 users have got. After taking a picture of my kiddo the camera (default app) froze... Yeah that is right the darn thing froze!!! After hard-rebooting the phone and doing everything as possible I was managed to get at least the back camera working!
However my facetime or my front camera will not work! After spending a good 2 hours searching and reading through out forums and watching youtube videos I have come up with the conclusion that APPLE does not want to admit that they have a software issue...
If you are lucky enough you would get your phone replaced of course that if you applecare! (which is $29.99 without taxes) if you run out of luck and you don't have a genius store in your country or near you then well you are ........ <-- fill in the blank!
the only possible way for you to get the back camera working is to go to setting-reset-resetallsettings!
I have not been able to get the front camera working again however, when apple releases a new update or when steve jobs iphone camera stops working then i guess someone would be fired for not reading or listening to those who have been loyal apple customers...
Windows phone anyone?

Well quite a few dual camera [front/back] Android phones were announced @ CES if you want to go that route.
I'm seriously thinking about it... I will wait for IOS 4.3 to come out and see if it would fix the problem...
Here is a link in the apple discussion board of people like me just not happy with their phone!
My iPhone4's two cameras suddenly stopped working last night.
I too spent hours online reading and researching the issue and trying out all kinds of seemingly crazy solutions.
I agree with you that it's definitely a software issue. I also agree that Apple are behaving in their usual aloof and abhorrent way by pretending the issue doesn't exist while quietly replacing many iPhone 4s.
However, I disagree that it can't be fixed without the "Genius Bar" (a name so patronizing and self-righteous that I feel sick typing it!).
At the end of all my attempts last night I simply turned the phone off (press and hold the power button until offered "Slide to power off". I left it off all night and this morning when I turned it on my cameras both worked.
YMMV but it worked for me.
Its quite magical isnt it that the phone has software issues. Maybe your just holding it wrong? ahahah
ok all puns aside, I would try a factory reset if you can with itunes, you should be able to sync every thing to you itues first so you dont lose any thing.

Der Meister if you google about the HTC androids phone, You would find that they also have several glitches that are annoying the crap of their users. the only benefit is that they do "acknowledge" the problem and they dont cost as much as the Iphone!....
Apple does not!
