So after much help from people here, I got all my system parts today. This is the first time I've built my own system so I'm pretty stoked. Here is what I ended up getting:
600T case, intel i5, Gigabyte p55-usb-3 mobo, msi n460gtx hawk, 4 gb ripjaws mem, corsiair tx650w psu
what I didn't get is any kind of thermal compound or grease (are these different things?) so it looks like I can't countinue assembling it tonight.
the psu came in a velvet black bag with a small corsair logo, so fancy, and heavier than I would have realized. It's been about ten years since I've had a new computer. :D
I'm starting a new thread here rather than just continueing my old one because it was sort of in the wrong section and was more about finding out where and what to buy.
Hey Resin did you get an aftermarket cooler? if not then the i5 cooler should come with thermal compound. Most aftermarket ones do too. Although I would recommend re-applying some arctic silver5 later, im sure stuff it came with will work for now, i know your probably anxious to get it up and running. Also if you have a radioshack nearby you could go pick up the arctic silver.

Indeed just use the stuff on the i5 CPU heat sink. I really wouldn't bother changing it out later if you never plan on over clocking it.

Yeah I figured that out almost right after posting this, :P
I got it running that night, I've been having a great time playing games and watching movies (Valhalla Rising, I liked it) for the last day or so, I was so thrilled with it, got all my programs loaded on using Ninite, then I went away for a day. When I came back I had a problem.
When I turned my computer on the monitor wasn't recognizing any video output. Later I noticed that my keyboard and mouse had no power either. All of the phase LEDs on the motherboard are lit up as well as 2 on the GPU, and the LEDs by the sound output are blinking fast, I have no idea if this means anything but I don't think they were all lit before. I tried taking out and replugging everything including the gpu, and trying to look for any possible shorts, I found that the 12v 8pin power for the processor (I think) wasnt quite pushed in all the way, but fixing that doesn't seem to do anything different.
I'm worried :( and don't know what to do.
I hope someone more experience can help you, but until they do....have you updated all your drivers? Lets just hope that unsecured pin didn't cause damage (if it can)

Yeah I did that the first day. Yeah I sure hope not. I sent a note off to Gigabyte's support, don't know if anything will come of that.
Humm, Try taking out the GPU and booting it.
Reset the BIOS too.
It's explained in the motherboard book how to do it.

Der Meister: Humm, Try taking out the GPU and booting it.
So I tried that, I obviously had no monitor plugged in but it still wasn't sending power to the mouse or keyboard. I also tried booting it without the drives plugged in, no change there either. I tested the monitor on my old system, it works fine. I think I'm looking at either the motherboard or processor being bad.
I'll try resetting the BIOS next. Actually, I can't see how I could do this without a live screen.
Resin:When I came back I had a problem.
Were there any thunderstorms in the area while you were gone?
Do you have access to a known good PSU to try out?

Check the Power Supply out first. What brand did you end up with? It's not a SeaSonic, is it?
Then take everything off of the board and try to boot. One memory stick to start with. Trial and error to isolate the problem.
Tell me what board you have so I can read up on it.
There were thunderstorms.
I don't have a known good PSU. I guess I could try looking at whats in my old dell, but the computer is ten years old I doubt it will work right. The power comes on and the fans go, speed control works and LEDS light up.
The one I got was a corsair tx

The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P55-USB3
Did you reset the BIOS?
Resin:There were thunderstorms.
whoops! not good
It's good to unplug before you travel if you don't have a battery backup unit..
At this point I would suspect the PSU first. Maybe a friend has a known good one to try it out with.
Try to find a PSU tester to check it with. It will not apply a load, but it will tell if the voltages supplied are within tolerances. It will also isolate a dead circuit for you. Corsair is usually quality stuff. I don't know how they are about RMA's though.
Have you been able to reset the bios yet? any luck?

I reset the bios - nothing, I completely replaced the motherboard -nothing. I think its pretty much down to the processor or the psu.
If its the PSU, try to get a refund and buy Corsair
dodgers2213: If its the PSU, try to get a refund and buy Corsair
Hes using corsair TX650.
dodgers2213:If its the PSU, try to get a refund and buy Corsair
SeaSonic
(of course if it's brand new they should RMA the darn thing through NewEgg and he'll get another one just like it)
lol oops I guess I didn't read his build right
Im going to say with about 100% certainty its the PSU.
Der Meister:Im going to say with about 100% certainty its the PSU.
I agree with you about 100%
