I bought their oppo 981 upconvert player, and i paid the full $230 for it on amazon. i was pretty dissapointed to be honest with you. it doesn't convert good standard dvd's to 1080p like they said it does. It doesn't even look as good as 1080i. My Lord of the Rings collection, to which tthe reviews said this thing especially did well with was mediocre.
The faces were a bit fat and other slight distortions dissapointed me. Furthermore, my cd's sound aweful on it. My old Sony dvd player made cd's sound a LOT better than this did. I hope they did a better job with this than they did advertising the 981 as one of, if not the best upconvert players. I have a denon 3808ci, Paradigm 9se's mains, focus v3 surrounds, and a paradigm cc370 v3 center.
I have a samsung ln40a530, which is a nice tv. Not the top of the line, but it's still a very nice tv and hi-def cable with a nice hdmi cord look great. And home theatre sounds awesome. Movies do sound good thru the 981, but that's about the nicest thing i can say about it. Wish i spent less on a panasonic that everybody was raving about back then....forgot what model.
I'm in the market for a blu-ray player, and noticed oppo dropped the price from $500, unless it's a different model. But i don't think I'll be buying it. I hear Panasonic is doing this rather well these days. Kinda surprised about it.
Edit;
I just visited oppo's site to see what's up with the line up, and this is a lesser model of the 1st one they made, which is still going for $500, and probably will for a very long time. The prices didn't drop for the 981 upconvert for a very long time, so i just went ahead and bought it.
I looked up the reviews for the OPPO BDP-83 on Amazon, it's very highly rated. This company looks legit.
The reviews on Amazon is why and where i bought the oppo981. and the company is legit. I called them up a couple times because they player wasn't performing like they said it would, and they offered different settings, but that's it. It didn't help. They exgarate, just like a lot of companies do. That is my experience with them.
I used the player about 10 times, trying to get that effect they claim it can produce, but no matter what, i couldn't get it to look great, like 1080p. It even fools my tv, which, when i hit the "info" button, it says it's displaying in 1080p, but it doesn't even look as good as 1080i, or 720p, nevermind 1080p.
I don't know why everybody was giving this thing such great revues. There is NO upconvert player that can reproduce 1080p like they say they can. It's impossible.
I still don't understand why Bluray is priced so high. It would seem to me if they at least split the price difference between a normal DVD and BR they would make more money in volume of sales.
