Ah, the videophone. Is it a dying breed, or simply a wonderful gadgetbeing introduced too far ahead of its time. After seeing Verizon's Hublaunch and then fall flat shortly thereafter, we're guessing it's theformer. Frankly, hardly anyone has time these days to sit down and takea call at home, so we definitely don't have time to sit down, getpretty, and take a videophone call at home.

For those lucky enough to know exactly what "free time" truly is,though, Asus is making sure there's an option. The AiGuru SV1T is saidto be the most intuitive way to make a VoIP call, boasting a 7" touchpanel, built-in webcam, speaker, microphone and Wi-Fi capabilities toletusers make unlimited video calls for free to other Skype users withoutthe need for a computer. The device is actually a second-generationproduct, with this version supporting Skype-to-Skype video and voicecalls, conference calls and even calls to fixed and mobile lines.

Honestly, the device seems like it would handle Skype video callseasily, but we're still not sure that anyone would take the time totruly take advantage. If you know you would, you'll have to wait a bitlonger before Asus dishes out pricing and availability details.

That's actually pretty neat, but are there any plans to support non-skype SIP calls? The proprietary nature of Skype is a bit of a turn-off. If I were buying such a device I would want one that supported open standards (SIP, H323, etc.) so that you could continue to use it if you switched service providers.

As is, it's like having to replace your normal (non-ip) telephone ever time you changed your long distance carrier.

People read the stupidest things.  Like this sig, for instance.

I'm not pretty enough to have everyone looking at me all of the time. After a while the phone would stop ringing,....
