The actual cost to make a blackberry is approximatly 25$ canadian each. The cost to buy one is probably included in what ever plan you sign up for, depending on your phone/cable providor.

It is a smart phone with a querty keyboard and a propriatary OS.

why is it so famous?  

It was the first querty keyboard smart phone (I think)

depends on which model you get and the carrier. I prefer a blackberry over other smart phones though. They don't call it crack berry for no reason at all. Best bet is go into your local store for whoever your carrier is
