You cant as passwords in an NT system are encrypted and stored in the SAM file.  Now if you have another admin account, it is possible and quite easy, just log in then go to start, run, and type in "control userpasswords2" without quotes and hit enter.  You then get a more windows 2000 user screen that gives you all the advanced options, like reseting the Administrator's password.

If for some reason you cannot change the admin password or escilate privledges to get it so that customer's computer has a working account that has admin rights, let me know, and ill help you fix it so he does have an admin account.

Anytime I had to do something like this before, I just formatted I assume this isn't an option for you.

Anyway some other suggestions are on this wiki, I have never used any of them. Best of Luck.

had to do this once and it would just let me do the, NET USER RIKS *, to change the password so here's a way around it.

you can run it in safe mode and create a new admin, by typing

net user User Password /add  user is just a random name you can change it if you want

then, net localgroup administrators User \add

you can delete the account afterwards.

if you want to change the password on the account you want to get into,

net user AMD * there must be a space between the last character and the

Assuming you can actually log into an account RIKS method might work if you have admin privledges, if not you are SOL.  Anything that claims to retrieve a NT password is garbage, it is impossible to do with the encryption algorithm in the SAM file that stores all the user account passwords.  Unless it is a specific program written by Microsoft, then it will not work as they are not going to just give out ways to hack into their OS.

As i said before if you want help AMD, let me know and i can PM you, if not then dont *** when you do end up having to reformat after you corrupt his registry, infect his machine with spyware and viruses, etc by using a program that will never work.

If any of you have ever had  OS systems design and security training, you would know this.

you could also try activating the hidden admin account, (if it's not already activated)

net user Administrator \active:yes

also if you have a vista disk there is a command prompt on it where you can type the commands in.

His issue is with XP not Vista. You can get to a command prompt window from an xp disk as well just do the stupid recovery console to get a cut down version of a command prompt.

A linux bootdisk or live distro with the nt_pass program works wonders as well if you do not have an account that you can login with.

This is what I use... Works every time.

There are instructions on the website... but a quick summary of how it works....

Download the iso and burn it to a CD. Boot the PC from the CD. Follow the directions on screen and remember to WRITE THE SAM FILE back to the disk. It asks you if you want to save the changes, if you don't you will have lost everything you just did. lol It doesn't look pretty but it works.
