Well after posting in a previous thread about psu's for someone's computer, I was wondering if you guys could compare the psu's out there. Except I mean along the lines of the 12v rail and how there are now multiple rails. I can't believe all the stuff I read on a manufacturer's website (pc power and cooling,) because at the end of the day what they basically say is "BUY OUR PRODUCT!" I personally can't believe that multiple rails is bad. Wouldn't there be less fluctuation in the rails if you had one dedicated to the cpu and one to the gpu? I'm thinking overclocking situations here. I would imagine that the separate rails would also be good for sli.
It was just a thought...
Multiple rails isn't bad, but there are drawbacks. Click on this link, and then click on the first search result (Principles of Power). I think you'll be able to see the full article without a subscription. I wrote that piece a couple of years ago and interviewed Enermax and PC Power & Cooling for their takes. Explains the whole deal...

Excellent! Thank you Marco, I'll give it a read.
Ah thanks for asking that question, Mental! I had wondered about mutilple rails myself. Great article, Marco, it provides a good explanation and answers.

Thanks. It's a little older, but I thought that article came out well and had a ton of good information.
That's an awesome write up Marco! I'm gonna have to go through and read it all when I have the time!

I think the big complaint is that you end up with waisted amps on some rails. I would rather have less fluctuation and you should always buy a PSU with more power than you need anyway.
Good stuff.

a little late response so i am sorry...but
marco, that article is amazing! I have always been interested in PSUs, pros and cons of specs and had a general idea but this article shines a whole new light on things generally.
Mostly what i am referring to is: I knew what to look for before but never quite understood why -- the article answers a lot of my "why" questions. Once again proving why you are my favorite facebook friend ;) haha
