I've never had any problem opening any Microsoft Office document in OpenOffice (In Linux or in Windows). Unless you need to spellcheck inline spreadsheet formulas in Hebrew, or whatever "features" they're adding to MS Office this year, I highly recommend spending the time to download OpenOffice and try it first.
A while back, I won the $600+ full copy of MS Office in a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"-like safety contest at work. OpenOffice works so well, that I actually gave the entire shrink-wrapped package to a nice Windows-only guy who was retiring that year.
People read the stupidest things. Like this sig, for instance.
I don't have much day to day need for office. When I do need it I fire up OO.org. It works for what I need, but thats not much. Huge download.
So far in life I haven't had much use for office base software either. If I find I need to open a .doc file or a spreadsheet, I use google docs.
