Not sure about the rules on this forum, but I know other forums frown upon talking about these kind of things.

    Re: streaming radio

I'm not saying it is wrong (or right) in this forum. I just haven't been here long enough to know. That is all I'm saying.

Since there are no stickies in this forum, I searched and found this thread:

    http://hothardware.com/cs/forums/p/26231/229656.aspx#229656

    Specifically, 6B says:

6B) This section deals with illegal downloading, selling, and buying of warez. This includes movies, music, games, and applications. Discussing the stolen content, how to get it, where to get it, trying to sell or buy it, will result in moderator action. Talking about P2P sharing programs is fine, unless the discussion ends up about using said programs to download illegal content as said above. These programs have legal usses as well as illegal ones, just do not talk about the later. (For example I've used bittorent many times to download popular game patches/demos when HTTP/FTP servers for these files were all too busy).

I guess you aren't downloading but I would assume it is illegal. Like P2P sharing, it is another workaround to get free music. Which is something the music industry is fighting against. It is just that this method is probably impossible to catch, but you'll be limited to the selection on the radio.

Anyways, I'm not too knowledgeable on the topic of music and copyright material. Also, I'm a newbie on this forum. I guess you can wait for a mod to come along and see what they have to say about this thread.

    Re: streaming radio

Well, yeah but I thought recording internet radios is the same as recording radio shows on cassette in the old days, as another guy said. And I don't remember hearing anything about that being illegal.

I don't think it's not legal to record from streaming radio. As long as the files are for my own personal enjoyment and I don't share them I don't see what the problem might be.I for one use Radiotracker to ripp music from streaming stations,it's easy to use and the files are saved as mp3's.

    Re: streaming radio

My understanding is that it's the bitrate at which the music is broadcast/recorded.  Many internet radio stations do less than cd quality...sometimes just less than. (176kbps,etc)

I personally use streamripper plugin for winamp.  As winamp is owned by AOL, I don't see how it's illegal.  Especially since streamripper has been around since winamp 3 or somesuch.    If AOL hasn't shut it down, then seems to me it would be all right.

However, the one place I am confused is that some of the stations on winamp sell subscriptions (like the techno stations) that do up your quality anf have no commercials.  IF they do up your quality, what then?

That aside, one thing I like about streamripper is that it breaks up your songs for you, as well as separating out your station id's for later deletion.  You can google it.

    Hope this helps.

Would this break or work around copy protection? I think if it does then this is illegal. I'm not sure if it is or not but the RIAA is a little trigger happy these days so don't be surprised if Dave or Marco deletes this. Welcome to the forums though.

    Re: streaming radio

    Thanks for the welcome...

I don't know if it works around it or not.  The RIAA imho is still lashing out randomly at folks without thinking all the scenarios through.  Hopefully this wouldn't be the case with recording internet radio.  It would be cool if Dave or Marco could comment on this thread or clarify...before they nix it (if that becomes the case).

The music would still be a below cd quality recording, so for true audiophiles, it probably wouldn't work.  As I use good old integrated sound, it doesn't matter to me.

Thats why I wouldn't be suprised if this got deleted. I assure you that dave and marco would let you know if they had a problem and what it was.
