the old 4850hd vs 9800gtx+ dilemma

A message from my brother who is making forays into the world of custom pc's

    Hello,
I am building a new pc primarily for gaming. For graphics I want either the 4850hd or the 9800gtx+, both of which cost the same in Hong Kong where I live. In all the reviews/benchmarks the two are seemingly equal (unless price is the issue which it is not here). They both can play crysis etc. with more than 30 fps so I dont really care about either of them being better at that- what I care about is how they are going to perform on future games as i dont want to upgrade my pc for at least 3-4 years. I do not want to sli/crossfire either.
    Thanks
    Chris

Re: the old 4850hd vs 9800gtx+ dilemma

if price is not a problem why not just go 4870 it beats the nvidia 280 and creams the 9800gtx+ especially if you want longevity nothing else has DDR5 muche less even DDR4 and a 9800GTX+ is DDR3 with less streams. Lol I'm still running my 3870 and have'nt had a problem yet when the 4870 X2 comes out a couple weeks I will upgrade because all the graphics card prices will drop then. Might even be a good idea to wait or build it with whatever card you have now anticipating a week to two after they release. You will get your card whatever you choose at a better pricepoint then for waiting a month. You will probably be able to save more money or get more for your money as the just release a lot of new products in other areas to. Either way just a thought if you can wait 30 days :)

The 4870 doesn't beat the 280, but it does beat the 260 by a small margin.

    Hot Hardware's own review: HERE

a cpu, a board, some ram, a gfx card, an opty, a hdd and a psu... all in a case

No but it comes close enough that the price difference would make you nuts to buy a 280. Even with the recent price drop.

I used to carry a hammer in my computer tool kit. Just for fixing the packard Bells though.......

when he says price is no issue he means the difference between the two cards he is talking about, the 9800 and the 4850

what i meant was price is no difference between 4850hd vs 9800gtx+, whereas the 4870 is out of my budget. so which between the two?

The 4850 is a nice card. He could buy two of those for crossfire one now and one later and not have to use Nvidia chipsets. That would be what I would do.

9800gtx+ has more fps than 4850 in almost every game. why would u suggest the 4850 if its not cheaper? plus, its ATI. i'm no nvidia fanboy. but after owning several nvidia/ati cards, i'd say ati is not as good as nv on the support and drivers department.
