    Switching Pcs questions

     Hey guys.. last time i was on here i got great help so ive come back for more. So my situation is that I have my pc that im currently on and a new pentium 4 pc that i would like to switch over to. so im wondering would it be alright if i unplug this hdd from my current pc and plug in to pentium 4 pc? im doing this as an upgrade from a pos celeron. So again.. Can i unplug my hdd from old pc and plug into new pc? and what will i have to deal with?

     It will work, however its not the best. If its a SATA HD then it will be easy and you can just plug and play. If its an IDE drive make sure the jumper is in the correct position for either master or slave.

     yep jumpers will be taken care of. Well if thats the case ill put it in tomorrow.. meanwhile ill wait for any more input..

    As long as it's not the primary drive with the OS on it.

    wait so ur saying it has to be slave on my new pc? i want it as my master that boots up my os..

    more than likely you will need to do a fresh install then. Although I have heard of people switching all the drivers and suff over to work in a new system but most of the time it don't work cause your OS from your old computer is reading the drivers for your old computer not the new one.

     Possibly. The OS has been configured with the other hardware, and bios.

    If  your going to use as the primary you might want to copy any important files to other drive 1st then try it! If it doesnt reconize drivers you,ll probably get a blue screen and then best case have to format and reload OS!

     my advice would be to install the hard drive as a secondary/storage drive. you will need the new hard drive to do the windows install.

    Have a read through this tutorial: Swapping your board without so much as a reinstall

     I've used this method a couple of times without a hitch.
