Which is the difference between 8800GT 600m, 640m and 670m?

Hi. Im about to buy a vid card: XFX 8800GT, and im wondering whats the difference between these models:

    XFX 8800GT 512MB 600M GDDR3
    XFX 8800GT 512MB 640M GDDR3
    XFX 8800GT 512MB 670M GDDR3

The 600m model is cheaper than the other ones, and the 670m is the most expensive. So whats this 670m about? Which of these models would you recommend me to buy(the difference in price is little, so i guess i would prefer to pay a little more for a higher performance)

    Thanks in advanceBig Smile

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 4 GB RAM(2x2, Kingston, PC2-6400), XFX GeForce 8800GT XXX 670M (512MB GDDR3), ASUS M2N-MX Mobo, Sound Blaster Audigy SE SB0570(7.1, HD EAX), 2 SATAII HDDs: WD 250GB and other Samsung 160GB OS: Windows XP SP3(Pro).

Looks like the difference in the core clock. You can in most case by the lower clocked gpu and just oc it yourself. It's basicly just a factory overclocked card.

Thanks for your quick reply. There is no difference besides the factory OC? I was expecting a better fan, or something like that. Ok, thanks a lot, nelsoncp21Big Smile. You helped me out countless times in this forum. I think ill go for the 600M and just OC it myself, just as you suggested.

Absolutely right.  They only difference is the faster clock.  They even appear identical in cooling solutions.  It's okay to go for factory overclocked cards.  They make you feel better about not having to overclock, and usually the default tempatures are as good as the temps for stock cards.  However, often factory overclocked cards are already close to their peak Mhz; they cannot overlock much more.  Meanwhile, the stock cards can often overclock to nearly or even the same level.  With XFX though, you can bet that the 670Mhz version will still likely be able to ultimately get higher Mhz, though perhaps not substantially more (merely guesses based on XFX reputation).  I have a factory overclocked 3850 that at the time cost $10 more than stock versions and I felt that was reasonable.

I think $10 is a good amount to spend on a factory OCed version.  I also think that based on Newegg prices, the 670Mhz 8800GT is NOT worth that high.  I'd say go with the stock version, lest if the 640Mhz version is only $10 more than go for it.  Or whatever the equivalent in your currency is.  Certainly don't spend more than 5-6% more for factory OCed cards vs the stock.  Merely my recommendations though, so feel free to disgredard my advice at your discretion.Wink

Thanks, Crisis Causer. I really appreciate your opinion, and the time you dedicated to help me. In my country, the difference between the 600m and the 670m models is approximately 43 dollars. So, ill follow both of your suggestions, and go for the 600m model, since $43 represents more than 14% of the stock price.

If this is the single slot 8800GT, you should go with the 600mhz version.  I have a single slot MSI 8800GT, and I have it overclocked from 600mhz to 675mhz with rivatuner.  It can't go any higher than that, because I will start to get artifacts when I raise it higher.

Well, even though they are both single slot 8800GT's, it doesn't mean they will overclock the same. I've seen articles where the max core clock and memory clock between different companies vary a bit. Also, even the same card from the same company aren't all going to overclock exactly the same.

What are your temps at 675MHz in idle and load? Did you OC the memory speed too?

By the way, I got the MSI 8800GT overclocked version with an aftermarket cooler (which seems to resemble a Zalman heatsink) and I'm loving it. Haven't tried overclocking it yet.

If you think you can’t do something, you’ll never be able to do it. No matter how easy it is.

I guess it is better to get the cheapest one and overclock it after that.It saves you money!

yea it would most likely easy to get the cheapest one and overclock it to the 670m. even if they overclock differently it would be easy to get to at least the 670m
