    Help in Hard Drive Choices??

    Hi,
    I am currently building a workstation for video editing. I have a few questions in regards to what would be the best choices in hard drives. As of right now the drive configurations are as follows;

    Drive 1: Seagate 146GB SAS Cheetah 15,000rpm
    Drive 2 & 3: WD (2 x 500GB) WD5001ABYS SATA2 7,200RPM
    Raid 0 configuration.

    I am considering changing drives 2 & 3 to either 10,000 or 15,000 rpm drives. I have a few questions for you experienced guys that are in the know;
    1) Normally the configuration for drives 2 & 3 would be used in Raid 0 as shown. If I was to go with 10,000 or 15,000 rpm hard drives, would I be able to run them in a Raid 0 configuration? Maybe I wouldn't want to.

    2) Would I be better off with the higher rpm drives as separate drives? If so, how would you use each drive in Vegas pro 8 and DVD Architect?

    Since I am currently putting together a new system, I want to make the right choices. I value all of your opinions and suggestions. Below is what I have configured so far with the exception of two monitors. I am currently trying to find a good OS LCD 22" or 24" monitor and a good LCD TV for video/editing. As always thanks for you advise and help. Ray

    You can run a 10k or 15k HD in a Raid setup.. although you usually need a SCSI setup for a 15k HD.

    As always, Raid 0 comes with the risk that if one drive fails, all data is lost.

    RayPaula:

    I do know that with any drive, Raid 0 provides an increase in performance (most likely not noticable unless doing a lot of reading/writing)... but i'm not aware of any direct benefits or disadvantages to wanting to keep them separate.

    Personally, I like 10k HDs... and my next upgrade will include a Raid0+1 setup with 4x10k 150GB HDs (assuming I can get the money by christmas time)... however, a lot of people do like 7200 RPMs and don't feel the need for a 10k.

    I know I didn't answer some of your questions/concerns directly... but its all I got!

    yea if your even thinking of raid 0 make sure you have a extra harddrive or server, to save infomation. But you would see an advange for sure. just make sure to Back up data!

    I believe that you are searching for the fastest drives in town, RayPaula! I have a little article for you to read, but first know that high-RPM's don't always equate to the highest transfer rates. To see some of the fastest mechanical drives available, read HERE. But I sense that you are actually a closet SSD (solid-state drive) kinda guy. For your viewing pleasure see HERE.

    Hi, Wow! That graph is quite enlightning. Yes I want speed, but I also need storage. Looks like Samsung and Seagate has the market as to both. Thanks for the help, Ray
