Intel is formally announcing a brand new processor today that it hopes will drive the next generation of mobile Internet devices.  Intel’s new platform for MIDs is called Menlow. And whereas the previous generation McCaslin platform was found in ultra low-voltage notebooks, Menlow is the processor and chipset combination you’ll find in future navigation devices, Internet tablets, video players, and gaming handhelds. From here on out you won’t hear Intel calling the platform by its internal name, though. The official brand is Centrino Atom and we've got all the details available right here...

For that much processing power, those TDP power figures are amazing. This just goes to show how far Intel has come since the introduction of the Pentium 4.

My brother keeps saying Atom is the next greatest thing for Portables.  He says he can't wait to get some kind of advanced PDA or ultra-portable with it.  I can see why.  One of those at 1.6ghz uses almost no watts.  Nice.  We can see some serious power on PDA's or iPhone like devices very soon.

500% profit?  How much do you think their $1500 CPUs cost to make?  Would be $250 if that's their scale for everything, which I doubt.

Well intel has giveaways to employees of their re-sellers in which if you take enough intel quizzes they give you an intel mobo, an OS, and a prettty top-o-da-line CPU for under $300. This year they gave a 965 board, Q6700, and Vista Ultimate I believe for $260. (Intel retail edge is what I am referring to).

So in this case either they are loosing millions of dollars or they really are marking stuff up a lot; I am going with the latter
