    gpu problems

I think my vid card may be going up. When playing midieval 2 all of a sudden the game froze up while also having jagged red lines across my screen. The program shut down I rebooted and everything was fine. Until later tonight I got the red lines again for a short bit playing CSS but the game didn't lock up. The lines were there for about 5 secs than gone and no more problems. So what do ya'll think is my Vid card on the verge of going up?

is the fan on it running?it could be just the fan crapped out. I have had that happen before.

    Re: gpu problems

If you haven't recently changed the drivers you're most likely overheating. Sometimes those problems are an early indication of things like capacitors dying, but that's less likely.

Usually seeing triangles is a Result of a Video ram going or gona bad. If you overclock your video card return it to default.. check heat and the other common culprits. If it still keeps showing the artifacts then yes your card is on its last days.

    Re: gpu problems

I have a waterblock on it and I just reapplied thermal paste and reseated it about a month or 2 ago. I also updated my drivers about 2 months ago in which I had been playing these games without this issue.

Nelson, what temperature is your card? We should first rule out whether it's a heat issue or not.

    Re: gpu problems

Well there is something def wrong and looks like I'll be messing with this thing yet again all night. Why is there always something going wrong. I don't even have anything oc'd anymore. I went to open nvidia control panel to check my temps and it said I had to install ntune. I know I have checked my temps many times before and never had to install anything new. So i went to the nvidia site and downlaoded and installed it but when I ran it my screen froze and everything locked up. So I rebooted and it still did it so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and still the same problem. I can open nvidia panel still but when I click on check temps, nvidia monitor of ntune everthing locks up. Going to look into this but if anyone has any experience with this or a quick answer let me know.

    Re: gpu problems

alright so I found several instances where others have had the same problem and they needed to update they're BIOS to get ntune to work speciffacly with my MB. The only newer version of BIOS on ASUS's website was a BETA version so I flashed my BIOS to the BETA version and ntune now works. I ran ntune's benchmark and my gpu temps varied from 47*c to 52*c which is just fine. Hoepfully the BIOS flash did more than just make ntune work. I guess time will tell.

yeah but in my case it never seems to be a simple fix! for you the glass is half full for me it's half emptyStick out tongue. it seems most problems I end up working around either due to lack of knowledge or pure frustration.it's funny I have built 2 other systems for other people and theirs runs flawless, mine is always giving me problems. guess it's better that way cause if it were theirs I would be nagged to death until it was fixed

So are you still getting errors in game after the BIOS flash?

    Re: gpu problems

No I haven't noticed anything yet of course I haven't had time to play alot lately but so far so good. I find it hard to believe that a update to a Beta bios version would solve these problems though. I half expected to see more issues than before using a beta bios version.

    Re: gpu problems

Well I started having major problems with mideveil 2 again. It got to the point where not even 2 mins in the artifacts would appear on the screen and the game would lock up sometimes shutting everything down. I tried going back to an older nvidia driver which didn't help. After doing the driver change I started getting unspecified errors when trying to start the game so I reinstalled the game and I lowered my video settings all the way down and changed the resolution to 1024x768 instead of 1280x768. Seems to be running alright for now. It only had a little hickup yesterday showing some artifacts for about a sec and then clearing right back up. I have a 7800gt and I thought it would be capable of running the game with no problems.

    Re: gpu problems

Yeah I know. We know it's def not heat(ruled that out) and I seriously doupt it's a power problem. I am not experiencing a problem with anything else except this game now. well I take that back I have encountered a message saying I was low on video memory while playing empire earth 3 and it lowers my settings which is kinda odd since it says the recomended gpu is a 7000 series nvidia card. That's not the minimum it's the recomended so I shouldn't have an issue at all I would think. Shouldn't 256mb be plenty?

    Re: gpu problems

I am really starting to get anoid with this now. I am still having issues with both medievil 2 and css. I was just playing css and getting artifacts randomly like ghosting almost from the team mates running past me. I can't figure this 1 out.

    Re: gpu problems

Artefacts are a common symptom of not enough power but you weren't having these problems before which makes this scenario unlikely. 52 °C is fine so we can rule out heat issues.  From what I gather you have changed drivers three times making them an unlikely culprit.

To me it seems that your card is at fault. I'm not familiar with complexities of graphics cards to specify which part of the card but as mentioned it could be unreliable capacitors or bad RAM.

Have you got a spare card from an old computer knocking about or mate with one just to confirm that it's the card before you return it or get a new one?

    Re: gpu problems

unfortunately I don't have another card. it doesn't do it all the time so I may just see if I can work around it for a couple more months till I get my new system finished. I was planning on putting the card in my sons pc but they may not be happening now since this issue.

    Re: gpu problems

Nelson, have you tried pressing down on the heatsink or wiggling it a little? I had a Radeon 9800 that used to do that and come to find out the heatsink was actually coming off of the GPU and sliding to the side. Pushed it over a bit and all my artifacts went away.

Like mentioned above though, you're getting a new one so burn the old one! : )
