Asus Eee PC 4G-X, Windows XP Unboxing Preview

We're always on the lookout for Asus Eee PC updates and today we've come up with some breaking news for you relative to the Windows XP variant that is due to hit the market in April.  Actually, it's more than just some breaking news; we've got one.  Though the machine isn't due out until sometime mid-next week, we were able to get our hands on a full retail bundle well before they hit store shelves in the US.

Impressive little thing for $400 isn't it. They probably could have squezed a bit larger screen in, but the price doesn't allow for complaints. It's kind of depressing to think that that little thing probably runs faster than my desktop. It's amazing how far technology progresses in 5 years, not to mention how cheap older technology becomes.

I was under the impression that the newer models were goijng to standardize on a minimum of 1GB of RAM, but the 4 GB SDHC card is an awefully nice throw in..

The concept of utra-portables are a nifty idea indeed....however I think squinting to see the screen and cramping my hands to fit on the KB would get old pretty quickly; not saying that I wouldn't take one though at the right price -- it would just require some add-on modification Cool

I'd like more storage, but otherwise it's something I'd be interested in.  $400 is a good price, but still outside of my wallet.

IMO that is a bit to expensive for what it is.  You can get a full fledged lappy with more RAM, more HD space and a faster cpu for alot cheaper.  If you ask me they should at least have a model running one of the low end core2 duo mobile chips, at least as an option so you dont have to use that celeron piece of crap.  Dell has a Latitude D 430 that is an ultra portable machine, and it is expensive, but it has a 1.2ghz core2 duo moible processor and it doesnt get that hot either.  If they offered an option for a diff cpu in the Eee PC then i might be tempted to get one, but as long as it has a celeron in it you can count me out.

No not with many of them -- they lack in in many base features such as this, the lack of an optical drive, and lack of usb ports (more than 2 anyway).  The KBs are about as wide as your hand is long and the display is extremely small (if you use reading glasses you'd definately need them).

I don't want to sound like some expert or anything -- I have seen 2 or 3 of the ASUSes brought in for repair/upgrades. RAM went in easy as pie so in a lot of cases if it lacks in RAM you won't have much trouble. Although there is only one slot available for upgrade.....

I'll this this: its new, unique, tiny, and definately ULTRA-MOBILE but I would never use one for an everyday PC.

Wow, quite the impressive little thing.

Is it just me or does the keyboard seem a little bigger than the originals?

I am quite surprised by the bundle you get, though I wouldn't care about the mouse, and I would get an 8 or 16 gig SD card instead of 4; it really shows that Asus listens to their customers, and is willing to do things a little differently to satisfy them.
