    A Few AMD CPUs Hit The End Of The Road

    The ultimate demise of the single-core desktop chip from AMD will have to be postponed for a little while longer.  AMD is still phasing out chips such as the Sempron LE-1150, but they're actually planning a higher-frequency replacement part called the LE-1660.  Intel is currently in the process of phasing out all single-core CPUs from their desktop lineup, which could provide AMD with a little breathing room at the ultra-low end of the spectrum.

    Sadly the LE-1150 isn't the only CPU we'll be saying goodbye to soon:

    “In addition to the Athlon 64 X2 6400+, 6000+ and 5600+, the company has also informed customers that final orders for its Athlon 64 X2 4200+ will be taken at the end of this month.”

    We're looking forward to the day when even Celerons and Semprons are all packing at least 4-cores.  Given the speed at which the industry is moving, there's no telling when that day will come.

    The ultra-low end isn't exactly where I would want to be taking a breather if I were AMD. Unfortunately for them, Intel has too strong of a presence at the ultra-high end of the spectrum for AMD to muscle their way in any time soon.

     with the production space they will save from not building these cpus they could use that to be able to lower prices or come out with something good sooner

     wow, are they just abandoning the mid range?

     

    I am very surprised the didn't try to at least put out some 65 nm dualies (+6400)

    Aaaand both AMD's revenue and profit continue to plumett.  They already have $35 CPUs, how much lower can ultra-low be?

    All the AMD news that I have seen lately literally makes AMD look like they are trying to figure out SOMETHING or ANYTHING to do to try and gain momentum.....I guess in the boardroom these decisions look like they may work but to us end-users we know they really need to hire new marketing-analysis teams...

     maybe more production space for shanghi that way if they have a good stockpile built up they can release them sooner

     Shanghai needed to have come out about 6 months ago to be competetive, most likely.  But the sooner the better, I hope you're right.
