IM GETTING A NEW SYSTEN WITH QX9650 ON A 780 SLI BOARD

ORIGINALLY GETTING 3 8800 ULTRA IN SLI.

BUT WOULD THE B9800GX2 BE BETTER?

Are you getting a pre-built system or do you have options for the motherboard too? Given the specs you listed it would appear cost isn't a huge issue. If you have the option to, I would get a motherboard with the 790i chipset. I would opt for the ASUS Stiker II Extreme 790i SLI. Here is a great review you should take a look at:

NVIDIA nForce 790i SLI Ultra and GeForce 9800 GX2

Also, yes it is possible with either the 780i or the 790i SLI motherboards to do 3 way SLI, you just have to use cards like the 8800 Ultra that are compatible with 3 way SLI. The only advantage the 780i board would have is that it uses DDR2 instead of DDR3. But that is only a temporary advantage based on price. If you go with the 9800 GX2 you should have more than enough power. If you want more you can add another in SLI.

I guess it is possible to install 3x9800GX2 on a 790i motherboard, but note that only a single GX2 gets too hot,and I hope there aren't a lot of problems caused by that but take caution.

Tri-SLI with 9800GX2 seem like an overkill and I've seen some benchmarks between Tri-SLI and normal 2-SLI and there isn't such a big difference in fperformance
