The Windows XP OS reserves 20% of your bandwidth for its own purposes like Windows Update. So to liberate this bandwidth:

1. Go to Start>Run. Then type "gpedit.msc", w/o quotes.

2. Click "Local Computer Policy", then "Computer Configuration", then "Administrative Templates", then "Network", then "QOS Packet Scheduler", and then double click on "Limit Reservable Bandwidth". (that was a lot of "thens")

3. Click on "Enable reservable bandwidth", then set from 20% to 0%.

4. Restart your computer and enjoy.

Only in Pro. gpedit.msc doesnt exist in Home.

And if you have to ENABLE it to set it to 0%...then it wasnt ENABLED in the first place.

I dont see this helping at all.

"There have been claims in various published technical articles and newsgroup postings that Windows XP always reserves 20 percent of the available bandwidth for QoS. These claims are incorrect. The information in the Clarification about QoS in end computers that are Running Windows XP section correctly describes the behavior of Windows XP systems.

Good point on the Home vs. Pro. As for setting it to the "ON" position. If when it is "off" before, and you go to the "explain" tab it says that 20% is being reserved by default.

And BTW...I got that from here

http://www.realtechnews.com/posts/3113

Bottom line..you wont see a difference.

**EDIT** Someone in that link above gave a good point. It would be easier just to uninstall QoS in the properties of your network adapter than to go through all that. But either way...you wont see a difference.

Only time i've seen a difference, is that the windows updates download much faster, and that my download speed went up ~3kbps. I agree, almost nothing to even look at, but hey, it's there.

Like I said above, windows updates now download a lot faster. Nice to have them download faster if your installing windows again and have a zillion updates to download. But I agree I didn't see any change in download speed, unless using a tool to measure it, and even then after averaging ~10 tests with each setting, it was only about 2.5Kbps. Small but only takes 10 seconds to do.

Would this tweak also work for Windows Vista Home Premium?

Yeah this is kinda bogus, I just disabled QoS to keep my system running smoother but, most people's NIC's (network interface card) are ethernet 100/10 which means it's a 100mbit connection (no matter what modem speed, the limit on the port is 100mbit).. But how many people do you know with a 100mbit connection? Windows still lets you use 80mbits, so it shouldn't slow you down a bit, that extra 20mbit  wasn't being used anyway, this might improve people on dialup connections or something but that's about it I believe =/

Yea, this is bogus, no way it hogs up more than 1% for itself.

better way to speed up the internet is to uncap the number of connections windows xp lets you have 10. with a program you can get 50-unlimited. (just make sure you ahve good internet...  increasing the limit for dialup wont help :-p )

link to site to get program

I remember doing this years ago when I only had a dial up connection. It made a difference then.

Now that I have Win7 and DSL it's no biggie.

I just tried it and I don't notice a difference.  On Win7 ultimate x64 that is.  I wasn't able to benchmark it because i got an ip error in Sandra.  You can try it, but I doubt you'll see a huge difference, if any at all.

I went and manually disabled MANY services with noticable results lol

I've got a handful of registry tweaks i've been meaning to test out and post up too. Just haven't had the time!
