There are a lot of cards in SLI that can beat the 6800 GT SLI. I'm just saying it's a better buy to get a GT SLI system than a single top-of-the-line card.

Edit: Does SLI support dual ATI cards?

No, that will be crossfire soon, which is capable of mixing different cards, woohoo!

Means I could use my X800XL and but an X850 XT PE x-fire edition and they would work together. You must have a mobo capable of supporting 2 gfx cards though.

For someone buying a new system though 1 high end card and a non SLI mobo works out cheaper in general than getting 2 SLI cards and a SLI mobo to outperform the high end card.

Or if you are a chippo like me - I built new system last summer, but went for a cheaper socket 754, and all SLI boards are with socket 939, so if I want to get SLI, I will have to change my CPU too

It looks like some Crossfire combinations will land up crippling the pipelines on the faster card. Like SLI, it looks like Crossfire will still have significant drawbacks, just not as many as SLI.

Depending on what you're playing a single 7800GTX should outperform two 6800GTs in SLI, even though a 7800GTX is only around 30-40% quicker than a single 6800GT. Some games will see very poor gains from SLI, like HL2, which in one review I read, only returned 6% extra performance when SLI was used.

Half Life 2 runs on Direct X which is where ATI have their current strength and not OpenGL which is nVidia's strong point. I am sure HL2 would get bigger gains if it was running off OpenGL

I wonder what X2 The Threat is running on: when you load teh agme it shows NVidia Logo at the beginning, and I heard tehy used NVIDIA tools for upcoming X3 also, so I would assume they use OpenGL and NVIDIA card would be better?

The old games that are pre-SLI don't really show much improvement. my dual 6800GTs score a lot more in 3dmark05 than a single GTx. BF2 gives me double frame rates in SLI, avg 120fps. But Call of Duty, a much much older game, doesn't really give me any improvement.

And if you're sittin on a single 6800GT or Ultra, and thinkin about sellin it for a GTx, get an SLI mobo and another card, cheaper and better.

Anyways, as new games come out that are better made for the SLI systems, more performance will be seen. The GTx imo is not worth the buy as single. Dual 6800GTs out perform and in the long run performance will be awesome on the newer games.

Not enough games out for me to replace my 6600gt . BF2 plays fine and my favor COD sure as hell dont need a SLI. unless game maker for PC get on the ball im not replacing my 6600gt any time soon.

With my setup i got 4980 on 05 and 12125 on 03. Basically what the scores should be for a stock card. Maybe someday ill feel up to taking the stock cooler off of my vid card and getting a new cooler put on then ill overclock it.

I scored a 3803 on 3dMark, and I got a 4237 on the CPU test. Nothing is overclocked. I'm gonna build a new PC this week. I'll post some numbers once everything is together. I hope I can get into the 7000 range. =) I can't wait.

My current PC is:

nVidea GeForce 6800
2 x 512 MB PC3700 Kingston RAM
Athlon 64 3200+ (Winchester)
MSI K8N NeoPlatinum nVidea nForce 4 Ultra
Thermaltake 480-watt PSU
Asus Star Ice CPU Heatsink & Fan
Hitachi DeskStar 7200 RPM Hard Drive

Edit: Okay, I got my new system together. Here's the results...6,880 on 3dMark and ~4,050 on the CPU test. I'm not quite into the 7,000 range or even beating my old CPU, but I'm gonna overclock my PC a little more.

NVidea 7800 GTX
2 x 1 GB PC4000 OCZ Gold
Athlon 64 3700+ (San Diego) @2.4 GHz
DFI LANParty UT nF4 Ultra-D
Antec 550-Watt PSU
Zalmann 9500 Heatsink/Fan
Fujitsu 15,000 RPM SCSI Ultra 320 Hard Drive (yeah, it's fast lol).

looks like with some overclocking you could have that GT running over 5k. With the latest forceware drivers 81.94 my 05 score was 4949 and this is with all stock settings for me. Cant wait for school to be over with so i can overclock my vid card and my cpu.
