Feature-Creep, New Site Channels, Functionality and Stylings

As you've probably noticed, we've been fleshing things out a bit more around here lately.  When HotHardware first started out, about 10 years ago (good lord time flies), we were primarily what I would call a "push" site or magazine of sorts.  We had a basic content engine that evolved over the years from static HTML to a fully dynamic, database-driven approach that was all the rage back then.  If you didn't provide reader the ability to search easily on your articles, you were limiting your site, in terms of the duration that a reader might spend viewing your hard work and diligent efforts in journalism .  This made sense of course.  It wasn't rocket science but it also meant you needed a solid database engineer on your team (at least back then) and perhaps even some additional server resources at your disposal too.  No sweat, we invested in you, our faithful readers, back then and of course buffed up our appearance a bit along the way as well.  We even added a forum so you could chat it up a bit.  Heck, it was only at the expense of a little beer money at the time -- so it was all good.

Time marches on and things change.  Someone had the notion of something called Web 2.0 where the reader actually gets the opportunity to contribute to the content.  Are you nuts?  They're animals!  Actually, wait... They're also smart, creative, passionate animals and we even like many of them (OK, we admit it, we love you).  Hmm...  We might be on to something here.  So we invested again.  Now, not only can you talk amongst yourselves in the forum but you can also contribute to our "content" (I hate that word; so sterile.).  Again, it was all good.  After all, our goal was to give you a home here; a place where you could kick-back, relax, kill some time and learn a little something along the way maybe too.  So let's run down the list:  fully dynamic, searchable database of articles and news - check, a forum community to foster conversation - got it, ability for the readers to interact with and comment on all content - it's in there.

Then, since way back in the late 90s we had all of these Datacom startups installing Terabit routers at every major ISP and Telco they could, we discovered we had some bandwidth to spare that we just didn't know what to do with (those poor bastards at Lucent never made a dime on it either).  And some smart, young Silicon Valley punk (just a hunch, I could be wrong) said, "I got it! Video!".  Yeah, yeah, sure, sure kid.  Video -- why would you bother watching video on the net?  Hey wait, that's a pretty good idea too and we can give the audience a way to participate as well.  We'll make them all stars

And so we invested in video and hope you like it as an augmentation to our traditional written content.  Now then, as Chief Cook and Bottle Washer around here, I'm also tasked with attempting to set the creative vision of HH moving forward.  We've got great forum software (with tagging, ooooh!), a comments system for your to throw your two cents into any article, and now we've got video (would you like to send us your video too?)  So where do we go from here folks?

I'll offer a little hint that we'll be expanding our product coverage in the months ahead and will include things that are bit more "gadgety" in nature.  What else would you like?  What functionality are we missing here at HotHardware that you would find useful?  What other products and topics would you like covered?

Sound off here and let us know -- but be gentle.  We've been on the net now for about a decade.  We've seen it all but we're getting on in our years and you young bucks, with your fancy ideas, could still blow our minds. Wink

Okay, here's an easy one:

Since you're going to expand the types of coverage, how about allowing users to customize their profiles so that the categories/tags they're most interested in are the ones that show on the main page?

3vil, hmm... interesting, OK.  It might take a bit of programming but it's not out of the question.  What new product coverage, in your opinion, would be most interesting?

do you have archives of how the site looked throughout the 10 years?

While, more gadgets would be welcome, I like the focus on PC hardware.

One thing I would be welcome, would be some "How To"'s in your video section.  For example, if you're going to do a watercooler shootout, how about making some short incidental vids showing how you installed each brand.  That way, if we were to buy one of the products on your recommendation - we could later refer back to the video when we were installing it ourselves.  I hate when I get manuals that look like Chinese run straight through GoogleTranslator.

Great to see the level of involvement progress as this site matures. It would be nice to see a few video's such as...

How to build a water cooling system would be a much needed one as it is a question that pops up often and would be of benefit to many that pass through

How to for overclocking would be positive to but just cover the basic or you will have a movie instead of a video  I attempted this last year for a friend but couldn't seem to get a cam angle or lighting suitable for a quality shot.

Lets not forget a How to Fold@Home For HotHardware!!!!!!!!!!

As you can tell I would like to see more video reviews...Yes i like this new feature the most of everything we have been given over the years with the exception of the forums...Videos Rock

Yeah, that's a pretty good one too.  Maybe show newer boards with two or three of the most popular BIOS families and what can be done to squeeze the most out of each.

Yeah i think it would be of benefit to some of the new comers and beginners.

All good input here guys, thanks.  How-tos are definitely going to be in the mix here in the future.

Dave in 10 years a lot of things has changed and obviously Hothardware has changed to, in the years that i been a member and those that i was not, I still was one of those that was greatful that sites like Hothardware were in place for us to learn and to help others in learning how to deal with their hardware.

One of the things that I loved about that there was always sticky in almost all the thread's of "Do it Yourself" I still remember BOA Overclocking Guide. Threads like that are what I will like to see more.

Also a format that will fit PDA, Blackberrys & I-phone. lots of Hothardware emails goes to my BB, and is a paying trying to scroll down to get to the info when you open the link...

thank for 10 years of help and knowledge buddy!

I think this is going to be great nothing better than video how to guide. Anything from the basics to OCing, water cooling and even flashing the bios. The ability for forum members to interact and send in their videos also how great is that!

Is there a "mobile feed" that I have not run across yet? I should let to get articles/reviews sent to my DARE for sure!

I WANT PC MODS!  :)

3vi1 wrote re: Feature-Creep, New Site Channels, Functionality and Stylings

MentalDisorder's got a pretty good idea there too:  There are several other enthusiast sites that have galleries of everyone's PC mods.... could be a good jumping off point for starting conversations in the forums.

HHW could destinguish itself by making a form to submit your mod that incorporates a list of the hardware you used, so that other people could recreate your feat without needing to bug you with a lot of questions.

also, some game reviews (no i dont mean disney princess) but alot of the games used to test hardware (crysis, stalker:cs, etc ) could have a full review and showcase which cards are best for it (in what price range) and how the game feels overall.

also.... LETS GET A COUNTER-STRIKE SOURCE CAL TEAM!

also, as a side note, when some one replies to a thread i get an update, i would like that to extend to blogs too, because i never receive any updates....

3vi1, Mental, what if we gave you a user gallery page sort of like this page:

hothardware.com/.../default.aspx

but there you'd have page full of images with up to 5MB of space to upload too... you could also then embed these images in the forum by using their paths.  And on your profile there would be a link to "3vi1's latest images" etc so that people could see it and we might even have an image randomizer in the forum somewhere.

We need to add a field in your profile page for your system specs as well.

What do you think about all that?

ice_73 wrote re: Feature-Creep, New Site Channels, Functionality and Stylings

system specs profile would be sweet.

a birth day reminder would be nice as well (ie todays is _____ birthday) like we used to have (btw, please get this implemented soon if you can my birthday is 8 days away :-p )

and id love to see a chat box. we all "kind of" know ea. other but if theres a chat box and i see another regular and we start up a chat and we learn more about each other. if this is impossible how about an irc?

I really like that chatbox idea....or even a chatroom. New guys could ask what would be best PSU to power their new 4870s and we could give an answer right away. Or a member could talk about some project they've been working on etc....

P.S. Dave, the mobile feed says its "unsupported document type" and loads no content to mis telephono

Dave_HH wrote re: Feature-Creep, New Site Channels, Functionality and Stylings

Ice, we might be working on the chat box actually and also, hopefully a user images area! :)

For the member's system specs area, we have this capability now actually...

- put it in "Bio" section, it will be displayed on profile page.

- put it in signature, and it will be shown in every post.

I think these are two very good options and you can do pretty much anything you need with these areas for your sys specs.

i dont know if you will still check this, but perhaps a forum input into what they would like reviewed?
