The web at large is expecting Motorola to announce its Moto X smartphone today, a handset built right here in the U.S. at a Texas-based facility and one that has Google CEO Larry Page "very excited." Whether it launches today or sometime later this month, one thing you might hear talked about is its new X8 processing system. Don't think of the X8 as a processor or a System-on-Chip (SoC), because it's neither of those things. Instead, it's a naming scheme for a collection of technologies, sort of in the same vein as Intel's earlier Centrino nomenclature, except that it refers to the meshing of a... Read more...

Psystar continues to make headlines, this time because the company’s OS X Leopard-based systems are now being attacked for what seems like the most basic oversight imaginable:"The company didn't get permission from developers working on the OSx86 Project to sell their work.  Netkas, who developed the EFI emulator Psystar is using, posted up a blog entry yesterday calling Psystar "liars" and has re-released his code under a license that specifically forbids commercial usage."If Psystar starts shipping their machines, it might end up causing a lot of trouble for the entire OSx86 group.  Thus far... Gigabyte is no stranger to innovation. Year after year, we see the company build unique features into its products to increase performance, improve power utilization, decrease noise, and enhance the user experience. As enthusiasts, we love to see innovations that improve products and differentiate them from the rest of the pack. Gigabyte has done just that with one of its GeForce 8800 GT video cards, the GV-NX88T512HP. Most companies selling 8800s just use the NVIDIA reference design with a different sticker on the cooler, and sometimes the cards will get overclocked as well. Gigabyte wasn't happy... Read more...

Over 90% of the world's computers and servers are still using the x86 ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) introduced by Intel in 1978. Many have tried to come up with an alternative, but nothing has come close to supplanting it. ZD Net examines the reasons why, and why it might continue turning up in computers until the sun cools off. A performance improvement that small isn't going to encourage a dramatic move away from x86, said Pat Gelsinger, a veteran chip designer and senior vice president and general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise... As enthusiasts, we are always anxiously awaiting new GPU architectures, with additional pipelines and more memory. All of these aspects usually go into creating the next must-have flagship video card. Like us, you've probably been wondering when single GPU cards would sport a full gigabyte of memory. Dual-GPU cards, like NVIDIA's GeForce 7950 GX2, already boast 1GB of high-speed GDDR3. And as exciting as that may sound, it isn't quite as geek-tastic as having 1GB of memory coupled to a single GPU. We all know it's coming; it's only a matter of time. NVIDIA's latest... Read more...
