Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak has reportedly spent many sleepless nights fretting about the day when technology would have dominion over humans. Like the turning point when the student surpasses the master, his fear was of a future where artificial intelligence would become smarter than people and take over the world, but then he had an epiphany. Wozniak surmised that when (not if, mind you) AI machines become smarter than us piddling mortals, they'll keep us around because they'll realize we're needed, that we as the human population are part of a delicate ecosystem,... Every budding entrepreneur is familiar with Apple's humble beginnings in a garage. From there, the company grew. And grew, and grew, and grew to where it is today -- a firm with a market capitalization just shy of $680 billion, and that's after the recent (and inexplicable) stock drop. Budding business owners use that story as motivation, just as teenage athletes are told that Michael Jordon was cut from his high school basketball team before going on to become one of the best NBA players of all time. The thing is, we as a species tend to romanticize history, and while Jordan really was cut from... Read more...
If you look over the most recent data from International Data Corporation (IDC), you'll see that Apple's share of the global smartphone market declined from 12.9 percent to 12 percent in the past year. Meanwhile, Samsung's stake is now almost twice that of Apple's at 23.8 percent. Granted, Samsung sells a lot more models than Apple does, but even so, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak believes the Cupertino company made a misstep by waiting this long to release a bigger size smartphone. "Apple could have had a much bigger share of the smartphone market if it had a larger screen iPhone for the past... Read more...
Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is a funny guy. He's also highly opinionated (aren't we all?) and an unabashed fan of technology. Hence, if you're a diehard Apple fan, you'll have to forgive the Woz for suggesting that the Cupertino outfit get in bed with Google and build an Android phone. The day that happens is the day Steve Jobs digs his way back to the surface like a character from The Walking Dead. Don't get us wrong -- we're not saying it would be such a terrible idea to play on both teams. And some of what Woz has to say makes a lot of sense. "There's nothing that would keep Apple out of... Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, personality-wise, was the yin to Steve Jobs yang, and the effervescent and jovial Woz is typically an entertaining fellow, always good for a fresh perspective on mobile devices or other technology. Not so the other day in the airport. FayerWayerTV snagged some one-on-one time with Woz as he was waiting for his flight, and the topic of conversation turned to the NSA’s PRISM spying program as well as cloud services. Woz teed off on the NSA by comparing its spying on the American public as akin to communist Russia. “Communist Russia was so bad because they... Read more...
If there's one fact that's emerged after Steve Jobs' death this fall, it's that the man hated Android. Really hated. As in, declared thermonuclear war on it and dedicated himself (and Apple's bank account) to wiping it from existence. In light of Steve's Khan-like level of loathing for Google's operating system, it's a wee bit surprising to hear the "other" Steve sing its praises. “My primary phone is the iPhone,” Woz said. “I love the beauty of it. But I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do." According to Woz, the iPhone is a better option for anyone who's... Read more...
What would you say if Steve Wozniak and his entourage cut in line in front of you?  Anything? What would you say, on the other hand, if they tried to "pretend" they waited in line overnight, for good PR, and THEN cut in line?In fact, according to Doug and Patrice Broussard, Woz actually never waited in line at all. The couple, who were there, said the Apple co-founder lounged on some of the mall's nearby sofas for about four hours and then ambled up to the front of the queue when the store opened at 8 a.m and simply cut in line. No discussion. And he wasn't alone. He had his posse in tow, say... Read more...
During a recent broadband technology summit in Australia Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak took the time to gripe about a few of Apple's newer products.“Steve Wozniak says he wishes Apple hadn't released a 2G version of the iPhone; that the Apple TV is frustrating to use, and that the MacBook Air won't be a hit.”Many of these sentiments have been echoed on forums and even reviews of these products, so it wasn't exactly a surprise to hear The Woz tell it like it is.... It's a mistake to assume that people that are smart about one thing --even a genius-- will have an intelligent outlook about other walks of life. I doubt Einstein would have made a great plumber.  But I'm not so sure about Steve Wozniak.  One of the founders of Apple, he's always got something interesting to say about very diverse subjects. And it might be because he has an intelligent approach to things, not a fixed set of ideas. He's now turned his attention to energy efficiency gains that might be possible in home construction. And as usual, his ideas are fascinating. The term "energy... Read more...
Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, has decided to back a new firm called Hotswap.  Hotswap specializes in video compression technologies, and they are currently offering technology that focuses on making digital media file sizes smaller thus enabling shorter uploads while increasing both image and video quality. The potential applications for various types of e-commerce are quite exciting.  If this technology becomes widespread, we might start seeing much clearer pictures and videos of the products we’re shopping for online.  There’s no word yet whether or not this technology might be used to shorten... Regular readers here at HotHardware know I'm a big fan of Steve "Woz" Wozniak.  And it's not just because of his historical importance to desktop computing, but due to his obvious intelligence, demeanor, and general good nature. Well, the game at Gizmodo has just posted the final installment of their video interview with Woz and in it he reveals something interesting about his interest in upcoming products at Apple.  (And just in case you're wondering, yes, that is a picture from the front bezel of my "Woz" signed Limited Edition Apple IIgs that still works perfectly.  Sword of Sodan anyone?) "In... Read more...
There is an interesting Q&A posted on the Seattle Times web site with Apple co-founder, and personal idol of mine, Steve Wozniak.  If you want to learn more about Woz, and gain some insight into the beginnings of Apple Computer and his relationship with the other Steve, take some time and check this out. "Q. You were working at Hewlett-Packard while you and Steve Jobs were creating Apple Computer. Did HP know about your Apple work? A. Yes. As soon as Steve Jobs suggested, "Why don't we sell a PC board of this computer," I said, "I think I signed something, an employment... Read more...
