Electronic Arts has been in a giving mood lately. After discontinuing support for The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection last month, the publisher decided to give the game away at no cost through its Origin digital distribution service. And through its On-The-House program, EA has temporarily removed the price tags from several games, such as Peggle and Battlefield 3. Now Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger is up for grabs. Like previous titles that appeared on EA's On-The-House program, this one can disappear at any time, so pounce quickly if you want relive those awful cut scenes that we thought were... Read more...
Once upon a time, there was an entire genre of space combat titles. Origin took an early lead with 1990's Wing Commander, but Lucas Arts followed a few years later with the hugely popular X-Wing and Tie Fighter series. In 1998, Volition gave us Descent: Freespace, followed by Freespace 2 in 1999. Both games sold reasonably well, but development on a hypothetical Freespace 3 was nixed when Volition was picked up by THQ. The problem, as often happens, was one of rights. Interplay still owned the rights to the Descent and Freespace franchises, but Volition and THQ had rights to other IP (the game's... Read more...

The 1990s were a veritable golden age for space combat gamers, but two series stand out in particular. Star Wars fans had the award-winning X-Wing and TIE Fighter series, while Origin developed the ground-breaking Wing Commander series. Ironically, Mark Hamil starred in the latter, beginning with 1994's Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger (HOTT). WC3 was a smash success, and two sequels followed: Wing Commander IV and Wing Commander: Prophecy. After WC:P, Origin abandoned the series, and space combat sims in general went into decline. The Freespace series and Chris Roberts' own Freelancer were... Read more...
Last year, the trio of developers at NimbleBit released their iOS game, Tiny Tower. The game puts players in charge of a building and the diminutive residents, dubbed "bitizens" who reside there. The game was a smash hit on both iOS and Android, was downloaded more than nine million times, and earned Apple's Game of the Year 2011. Enter Zynga. The company has been heavily criticized for copying virtually... well, everything. It settled with the creators of Mob Wars for $7-9 million, released a near-identical copy of Playfish's Restaurant City, and spawned FarmVille -- itself a ripoff of the title... Read more...
