Toshiba and Western Digital announced a deal today in which the two companies will essentially swap some manufacturing equipment with each other -- though which is getting the better deal is debateable. Western Digital has agreed to sell Toshiba certain assets related to the production of 3.5" hard drives "to address the requirements of the regulatory agencies that have conditionally approved or are continuing to review the company's planned acquisition of Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST)." Western Digital today announced it will demonstrate the ultra-fast data transfer rates of its upcoming My Book Thunderbolt Duo dual-drive storage system at the Macworld/iWorld show. The Thunderbolt-equipped My Book gives the storage system access to up to 10Gbps of theoretical throughput on each of two channels in both directions. Word around the Web is that some hard drive makers are cutting down their warranty terms, the timing of which couldn't be any worse (we'll get to that in a minute). Multiple motherboard manufacturers are warning that precipitously rising HDD prices will impact their sales. Gigabyte has issued guidance that it now expects Q4 shipments to fall by 20 -25 percent, while Asustek predicts a much smaller decline of ~five percent. Analysts believe Asus is underestimating the impact of the price increases, and think the company's sales could fall as much as ten percent. Both analysts and Apple are warning that the price of hard drives, which has already been creeping upwards the past few weeks, could jump significantly in Q4 due to catastrophic floods taking place in Thailand. Today, WD announced that it is halting the production of hard drives in its facilities close to Bangkok, Thailand due to severe flooding. Although the company's employees are safe and the facilities are operational, the flooding has created problems with the region's infrastructure including transportation and utilities. WD says it is currently working with its suppliers to maximize throughput and availability of parts, but it's too early to say how much of an impact this will have on the production of hard drives.
