Solid state drives continue to be all the rage, due to their durability, silence, and high performance versus traditional hard drives, with spinning magnetic media. And while SSD prices have dropped significantly this past year, they remain relatively expensive in terms of cost per gigabyte, and are still many times the price of a hard disk drive. The price disparity between solid state and hard disk drives often forces mobile and small form factor users into the unenviable position of choosing performance over capacity. Provided they’ve got the budget, desktop users needn’t compromise,... Read more...
When it comes to choosing a storage scheme, there are couple of cost effective solutions for power users. One is to install a solid state drive (SSD) for the OS and programs, and a spacious hard disk drive (HDD) for storing photos, videos, and other data hogging files. A second option is to invest in a solid state hybrid drive, which is an HDD with an SSD cache buffer for frequently accessed programs. Both are serviceable, though both have tradeoffs (the first takes up two storage slots, and the second isn't as fast as a dedicated SSD). There's now a third solution courtesy of Western Digital,... As laptops and ultrabooks get thinner, even 9.5mm-thick mobile hard drives are starting to look bulky. Western Digital is stepping up with a new 1TB WD Blue hard drive, which comes in at a mere 7mm thick. The 2.5-inch drive supports standard 9.5mm drive bays in today’s laptops, but it’s also thin enough to accommodate future, compact notebooks. WD's Blue line has even thinner drives, albeit at lower capacities. “Users with large portfolios of content no longer need to sacrifice capacity when buying an Ultrabook or upgrading to a thin and light notebook,” said Matt Rutledge,... We all know that solid state storage is the sexy option these days, but a lower cost per gigabyte and higher overall capacities have kept mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs) from becoming irrelevant or otherwise obsolete, especially in datacenter environments. It's no surprise, then, that Western Digital continues to devote time and resources into HDDs. The company's newest product is its WD Se family, a line of enterprise-class HDDs that are best suited for bulk cloud storage, small-to-medium business (SMB) environments, high-end NAS applications, replicated environments, archiving, and other backup-heavy... In a way, it's a wonder that Dropbox is still an independent company. But as long as it is, it might as well bulk up on partnerships. Western Digital is the latest friend, with WD SmartWare Pro launching with Dropbox integration. It's a new software tool that enables users to back up files to any USB external HDD or to the cloud using their Dropbox. Additionally, in the event that a file is deleted, lost, or a previous version of a file is needed, WD SmartWare Pro makes it easy to quickly restore and retrieve backed-up data. Additionally, in the event that a file is deleted, lost, or a previous... Read more...
Hybrid hard drives featuring mechanical platters supplemented by a chunk of speedy solid state storage for fast access to the most frequently accessed programs seem to be where the market is headed, and Western Digital has no intention of being left behind. In fact, WD claims it's now sampling the thinnest 2.5-inch hybrid hard drive the world has ever seen. WD's drive measures a scant 5mm thin and is slim enough to squeeze into today's slimmest notebooks, like Ultrabooks (Intel) and ultrathins (AMD). According to WD, the new drives have a footprint that's nearly 50 percent smaller than traditional... Read more...
Quick! What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Western Digital? If you're like most people, you immediately thought of hard drives and other storage products, which have been WD's bread and butter for several decades now. But the times, they are a changin', and in case you haven't noticed, Western Digital is no longer content to simply take residence in your PC. That became evident when Western Digital dove into the media player market with its WD TV line-up of set-top boxes, but why stop at owning the living room when you can lord over the entire manor? Unable to come up... Read more...

There's no denying that solid state drives (SSDs) are the sexy storage option, offering the luxury of blazing fast read and write transfers along with the reliability that comes from having no moving parts. But they're also comparatively expensive to mechanical hard drives, and typically smaller in capacity, too. So where does that leave HDDs? For many, it's still the primary storage option, while even SSD adopters view them as viable secondary storage devices. In other words, HDDs still have their place, and unfortunately, it doesn't appear that today's still-inflated prices will fall to pre-flood... Read more...
According to IHS iSuppli, the SSD market will continue to boom this year, thanks to the rapid rise of so-called cache drives. These drives -- we reviewed a 60GB example from Corsair last month -- are popular with OEMs because they pair a small amount of NAND flash with a traditional hard drive. We aren't surprised to see cache drives taking off in desktops, but their popularity in notebooks is a little harder to parse -- particularly when you consider that Hybrid Hard Drives, like Seagate's Momentus XT, have been on the market for several years. While Seagate's HHDs aren't necessarily as fast as... Read more...
Western Digital is entering the wireless home networking market with the introduction of My Net family of home networking products. All of the new products feature WD's FasTrack optimization technology that prioritizes entertainment traffic from Netflix, Hulu Plus, VUDU, YouTube and others to deliver a smooth streaming experience up to Full-HD 1080p quality. The My Net Router family includes the My Net N900 Central, My Net N900, My Net N750, My Net N600, and My Net Switch. The My Net N900 Central HD dual-band storage router offers accelerated HD streaming and integrated storage (1 TB or 2 TB) for... Read more...
Although solid state drives have generated the lion’s share of buzz in the storage space these last few years, traditional hard drives with spinning media continue to be a mainstay of the industry and have evolved to offer higher capacities and more performance than ever before. Of course, even the fastest of today’s hard drives can’t compete with solid state drives in terms of peak transfer speeds and especially access times, but the release of the new WD VelociRaptor we’ll be showing you here today helps close the gap just a bit... Right now, the "industry standard" for a laptop hard drive is 9.5mm. Some of the largest desktop replacements can use drives a few millimeters higher than that. But soon, 7mm may be the go-to size, as Ultrabooks become the norm and mobile becomes...more mobile. Today, Western Digital introduced a new 7.5mm 2.5" HDD in the Scorpio Blue family. It's said to be the 2.5" drive with the lowest power consumption on the market today. Specified to a best-in-class 400Gs shock tolerance, the new single-platter WD Scorpio Blue small form factor hard drives are available in 500 GB and 320 GB capacities and... Read more...
