There’s a new member of WD’s My Cloud family, and it’s designed to fill the niche between the consumer-level My Cloud personal cloud storage device we reviewed a few months ago and the more professional-leaning My Cloud EX4 (with up to 16TB of storage capacity). Roughly a year ago, Western Digital launched its 3.5-inch WD Red NAS hard drives in 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB capacities, and now the company has added to the Red family with a 4TB 3.5-inch drive as well as a couple of 2.5-inch options. The 2.5-inch WD Red NAS drives, like the 3.5-inch versions, are also purpose-built for SOHO NAS storage with 1 to 5 bays. Western Digital’s color-coded families of hard drives added another member today in the form of WD Red, a line of 3.5-inch drives designed specifically for small office/home office NAS systems with between one and five bays. The drives come in capacities of 1TB, 2TB, and 3TB (SATA 6Gbps) and feature NASware and 3D Active Balance Plus technology for better reliability and system performance, IntelliPower RPM, 145 or 150 MB/s transfer performance (depending on the model), 64MB cache, and are rated for 1 million MTBF.
