Normally, the question of whether a game runs better on the PC or a console is a no-brainer -- at least, for PC users. Watch Dogs, however, with its problematic PC play, challenges that concept. And since the gap between consoles and PCs is typically smallest at the beginning of the console generation, we decided to take the Xbox One out for a head-to-head comparison against the PC with this long-awaited title. What we've found may surprise you. Based on our results, and depending on just how much horsepower your PC has, the Xbox One might be the better option... Watch Dogs Graphics And Game Play:... Based on our results, and depending on just how much horsepower your PC has, the Xbox One (and possibly the PS4 option, though we didn't... Read more...
In the age of digital downloads, a game is never truly finished until the dev team hangs it up. And, with a U.S. holiday just around the bend, the folks behind "Watch Dogs" are giving owners something else to chew on with their day off. Starting today, "Watch Dogs" owners will be able to download three new single-player missions, a host of new weapons, and even a few bonuses. Of course, Season Pass holders had access last week, but the general public can now partake for $7. Or, you could buy into a Season Pass right now for $19.99 and get this pack right away. The single-player missions include... Read more...
Publisher Ubisoft is promising to release a major patch in the next few days that will fix a plethora of issues in Watch Dogs, arguably one of the most anticipated games of the year that unfortunately debuted with several bugs and performance issues. The fixes apply to all platforms, and in fact a patch for the PlayStation 4 version is already available. Ubisoft will address the PlayStation 3 and PC next, followed by the Xbox One and Xbox 360 within the next week. Among the major game fixes for all platforms is one that will automatically reconstruct corrupted save files that prevented loading... Read more...
Over the past few weeks, I've spent a significant amount of time with Watch Dogs. The game is infamous for not running very well on PCs -- and after some legwork, I've figured out a hefty chunk of the reason why:  Ubisoft royally screwed up its suggested VRAM (graphics card frame buffer) settings. Watch Dogs sucks down far more memory than any other modern PC game I'm aware of; this game's VRAM demands are far, far outside the norm for a modern 1080p title. In the past, I've compared VRAM usage in games like Guild Wars, Battlefield 4, and Total War: Shogun 2.  In these games, the average... Read more...
We're not going to stand on our soap box and talk about how pirating games is wrong and how it robs publishers and developers of the fruits of their labor. We won't even bring up how piracy has led to increasingly intrusive and annoying DRM schemes. However, we will point out that there are other reasons why you should think twice about pirating a PC game, one of the biggest being the risk of infection. Can you really trust that torrent file to be free of malicious debris? Not always. There's a torrent floating around that claims to be an early version of Ubisoft's forthcoming Watch Dogs title,... Four more days. That's how much longer you have to wait for Ubisoft to release Watch Dogs, one of the most anticipated games of the year, though it might has well be four hundred days, because that's what it feels like. With each new trailer Ubisoft teases us with, we grow increasingly anxiously and more impatient to jump into the role of Aiden Pearce, a hacker on the hunt for revenge. The latest trailer is more of the same -- gripping storyline, good graphics, fun game play elements, city hacking (Watch Dogs takes place in Chicago), and of course lots of hype. Nothing new is revealed, but that's... Read more...
This may come as a shock to the system if you were expecting Ubisoft's upcoming Watch Dogs title to run at Full HD 1080 (1920x1080) on your PlayStation 4 console, especially after Sony straight up said "the game will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second on the PS4" in a recent blog post, but it's actually going to run at 900p on Sony's game machine. If it comes as any consolation, that gives you bragging rights over your Xbox One brethren, who will see the game at 729p. There was a bit of confusion after Sony posted those numbers, which have since been removed. To clarify things, Ubisoft revealed... Read more...
A new website sponsored by Ubisoft as part of its advertising campaign for the upcoming hacking-themed game Watch Dogs isn't just a plug for the title -- it's a chilling example of exactly how easy it is for companies to mine your data. While I'm normally averse to giving any application or service access to my Facebook account, I also take some effort to lock down my settings and posts. I decided to make an exception to this policy and give the application access to my account data. What it came back with is interesting, scary, and informative by turns. There are precious few photos of me online,... Read more...
You never know how a game will actually turn out until you've had a chance to play it and/or see it in person, but with that said, we're confident that Ubisoft's forthcoming Watch Dog title is going to at least look fantastic on the PC. You will too after viewing the latest Watch Dogs trailer, which showcases various NVIDIA technology. "Ubisoft and NVIDIA have been working closely in order to create the most vivid and breath taking Chicago possible for the PC version of Watch Dogs," explains Paul Vlasie, PC Lead Engineer on Watch Dogs. Vlasie narrates the trailer, providing viewers with some insight... Read more...
Ever since Ubisoft unveiled its upcoming open-world, action-adventure game Watch Dogs, the game press has been looking towards the title as a no-holds barred example of next-generation innovative gameplay. Unlike most games, which place an emphasis on run-and-gun shooting, Watch Dogs revolves around the idea of hacking. The main character, Adrian Pierce, can penetrate a variety of devices from phones to traffic lights and use the knowledge to steal cash, destroy equipment, trigger malfunctions, and wreak general havoc on an unsuspecting populace. It didn't hurt that when the game debuted, it was... Read more...
At long last, Watch Dogs appears ready to pounce on previous and current generation game consoles, along with our favorite platform, the PC. After a trailer of the upcoming game leaked to the web, Ubisoft has come out and confirmed that Watch Dogs will launch around the world on My 27, 2014, to the Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PC. Wii U gamers will get to take Watch Dogs out for a walk as well, but it will be at a later date. Ubisoft confirmed the launch a few hours ago on the Twitter account it set up for Watch Dogs. The game takes place in a fictional version of Chicago,... Read more...
Investors didn't react kindly to Ubisoft's profit warning, sending shares of the games publisher down by as much as 32 percent, the largest decline the company has ever seen. The stock plummeted after Ubisoft said it now expects an operating loss of 40 million euros (around $54 million) to 70 million euros (around $95 million) for the year ending in March after delaying Watch Dogs and The Crew. Ubisoft decided to delay both titles in order to improve the quality of game play. It's a decision that Ubisoft Chief Yves Guillemot told Bloomberg will "pay off in the long run." He also said the market... Read more...
