If you’re planning to pick up a Kindle Fire at Walmart, you’d better hurry. The retail giant won’t be bringing in any new shipments of Kindles, likely because it sees Amazon as encroaching on its digital retail space. The do-not-carry list includes all Kindles, including the humble e-readers. Similar e-readers and tablets, including the iPad and Nook, aren’t expected to be pulled. Walmart may be distancing itself from a device that lets consumers shop Amazon’s website online, or it may be seeing consumer interest in other devices. Or both. In any event, Walmart... Read more...
Your friendly neighborhood Walmart may be getting even closer to "getting with the times." And in fact, surging beyond them. To date, few stores have really, truly embraced mobile payments. And perhaps even fewer have even considered smartphone integration with the buying process. But the mega-retailer Walmart is reportedly testing a new system that could enable shoppers to scan items as they browse using an iPhone, and then pay at a self-checkout counter based on what they've scanned in the store. It's a shifting of the process; today, the self-checkout lane makes you scan everything as you exit,... Read more...
Now is a good time to stock up on iTunes currency if you're invested in Apple's iOS platform, or plan to be at a later date. Like, say, when the iPhone 5 comes out, or the iPad Mini, if the latter ends up being a real product. Either way, you can grab a $100 iTunes eGift card from Walmart's online website for $80. This is far from the first time we've seen iTunes currency marked down, though it's not too often we see vendors slash 20 percent from the cost -- it's usually 15 percent. Whether you're out of iTunes currency or just looking to stock up, this is one of the best deals we've seen. It's... Read more...

Oftentimes, we find ourselves wishing that Wi-Fi was everywhere. Kind of like oxygen. But given that it's not going to happen any time soon, this is actually getting us closer to the goal. TruConnect Mobile has announced a partnership with Walmart that'll bring Internet on the Go to customers. It's described as a "prepaid mobile broadband service that offers a great value for casual users." The keys here are twofold: Walmart, meaning widespread accessibility, and prepaid, which puts in the hands of so many people who have no need to commit to a two-year data agreement. The service will start by... Read more...

For various reasons, not everyone owns a credit card or a debit card with a Mastercard or Visa logo on it. Perhaps you don't care for the concept of buying on credit, or maybe your credit rating is jacked and you either can't quality for a credit card, or can only quality for a high-interest rate card with an annual fee. Whatever the case, not having a credit card makes it difficult to shop online, particularly if you're a cash-only type of person (which rules out Paypal and online banking in general). Enter Walmart. Earlier this month we covered Walmart's burgeoning partnership with the Ultraviolet DRM system backed by major Hollywood studios and their plans to "assist" customers in registering DVDs with the Ultraviolet system. UltraViolet. Heard of it? Not surprising. It's the movie industry's big-money shot at curtailing piracy, and while loads of companies are onboard, few people have heard of it -- let alone understand it. One major factor is that Apple, a leader selling of media online, isn't onboard with the program, and these days, it's tough to win in media distribution if Apple isn't on your side. All of that aside, UltraViolet is hoping to get a major push by teaming up with a major retailer: Walmart. According to the Wall Street Journal, Walmart is talking with UltraViolet in order to bring a service to stores... Read more...
