Well, we can't exactly act surprised. With Windows 8 and Windows RT just around the bend, you may have wondered if Microsoft was going to try and integrate Skype into the fabric of those operating systems, much the same way FaceTime is integrated into OS X. With Microsoft paying a princely sum for Skype, it seems that the VoIP app will not only appear in Windows 8 and Windows RT, but will play a starring role. Microsoft and Skype are both being pretty quiet on the whole ordeal, but their websites speak louder. Both "Anna" and "Elena" are shown in screenshots on both sites, making it pretty easy... Hey, Windows users -- seeing ads in your Skype calls? Fret not, it isn't an unathorized version of the software; it's just a new twist on "free" VoIP calling. Skype has today announced the launch of Conversation Ads, finally, a way to make cash off of free calls. These new display ad units will appear within the calling window of users who do not have Skype Credit or subscriptions when they're making 1:1 Skype-to-Skype audio calls using Skype for Windows. Strangely, no other platforms -- desktop or mobile -- are mentioned; perhaps ads are being ported elsewhere as we speak. These new Ads are billed... Read more...
It’s a long-running joke that most of us use our phones to make phone calls rather rarely, opting instead to use them for texting, Web browser, games, productivity, and social media more often. Perhaps that’s partly why AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson suggested this week that data-only wireless plans are likely coming within two years. According to CBS News, instead of having separate options and pricing for calls, texts, and data, mobile carriers will fold all three into one “data” plan. AT&T isn’t necessarily saying that it’s developing such a plan, but... Read more...
What exactly is Dell these days? A PC maker? A smartphone maker? A tablet maker? Dell's been trying a little bit of everything the past few years in an effort to see where traction could be gained, and so it's hardly a surprise to see them delving into yet another market: voice over IP. This week, Dell Canada and Fongo announced the launch of their new mobile app, Dell Voice - a free to download full feature VoIP phone alternative that may help Canadians save money on their mobile phone bills. Users of Android and iOS devices can now avoid costly long-distance charges and daytime calling restrictions... Read more...
Who doesn't like free? Vonage, which is still around helping people who love home phones, is finally taking a serious leap into what's next: mobile. The company just announced the new Vonage Mobile iPhone and Android app, which lets users make free high-definition calls and send free texts to all users of the app, worldwide. It works over Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G data networks. When calling those who have not yet downloaded the app, Vonage Mobile provides ultra low-cost international calling with per-minute rates that are on average 70 percent less than major mobile carriers and 30 percent less than Skype.... There's an old saying that goes something like "the best things in life are free."  Then there's another, more cynical proverb that says, "there's no such thing as a free lunch."  While I'm not here to choose sides or recite old proverbs, I'd offer that, in reality, both views are often very true and have merit. Which brings us to the notion of "free home phone service," that the folks at Ooma like to market their Telo Voice-Over-IP product with.   Could it be that this product really offers free residential phone services?  The answer of course isn't that simple but we did... Heading out for the holiday season? Good luck with your travel plans, as getting from point A to point B can an exercise in frustration this time of year (might we suggest watching Planes, Trains & Automobiles), but if you're a Skype user, one thing you won't have to worry about is finding free Wi-Fi access in the U.S. "Great news Skype friends! Skype is setting out to make travel a little more pleasant this holiday season by offering a free hour of Internet access to third-party wireless hotspots within the Skype Wi-Fi hotspot footprint in select airports across the U.S.," Skype announced... VoIP. It's the wave of the telecommunications future, man. All kidding aside, there probably is some truth to that, as both LightSquared and Skype's co-founder are teaming up to offer free broadband services. The former is described as a "wholesale carrier building a nationwide wireless broadband network that will create consumer choice and drive industry innovation," while FreedomPop is described as "a disruptive new company that will offer free broadband and voice services to all Americans, have signed a wholesale network agreement." FreedomPop is spearheaded by Niklas Zennstrom, co-founder of... Read more...
A bustling shopping mall in Canada is ending a more than century old tradition of having kids line up for hours to sit on Santa's knee to tell the bearded gift giver what they want for Christmas. This year they'll need to sign up in advance for a one-hour story time session on Saturday morning, in which they'll also have a chance to sit on his knee and have their photo taken; the rest of the time he'll be on Skype. "Santa has gone digital! This year, only at the Toronto Eaton Centre, your child can have a one on one Skype with Santa!," the mall states on its website. Parents can register their... Read more...
Enjoy free calling? Of course, who wouldn't? While Google Voice and Skype (amongst a host of others) have provided some fee-free calling options, we haven't seen that kind of enthusiasm from actual mobile carriers. No shock there. But T-Mobile USA is going against the grain with Bobsled, a service and technology that was briefly heard about earlier this year, but now seems ready for a proper introduction. T-Mobile today announced enhanced and expanded functionality for its Bobsled by T-Mobile service, with the facelifted version providing users with an easy way to call Facebook friends from most... Skype for Mac hasn't exactly done well with users. The overall user interface tweaks made to the software went over poorly with many, and they certainly went out of their way to make sure those complains were heard loud and clear. Now, the company is looking to silence the criticism with an all-new release tailored for use with OS X Lion. Skype 5.3 for Mac was just unveiled this week, bringing with it support for the new Mac Lion and HD Video Calls. It has several bug fixes, thrown in, and is backwards compatible with Snow Leopard and Leopard. With Skype 5.3 for Mac OS X, users can send and... Read more...
Did someone crown this week the week of VoIP? There's been quite a few things flying around -- namely, Google's decision to lower VoIP calling rates from within Gmail, and now, Vonage's decision to battle on the iOS front. Oh, and Viber came out with an Android app. See what we mean? Vonage has long since proclaimed to be the cheapest in-home way to call folks around the world, and now that's spreading to the mobile front. This week marks the launch of their pay-per-call international app for iPhone, with Direct Payment through your existing iTunes account. There's even free calling to 100 countries... Read more...
Just as soon as Facebook and Skype announced their major integration deal a few weeks back, Skype for Windows v5.5 Beta hit the download page. Now, the final version is here: Skype 5.5 for Windows is available for download, and based on user feedback since the June beta, there have been a number of updates that the company says warrant an upgrade. The Skype 5.5 for Windows update comes with a deeper Facebook integration. Without having to leave Skype, you can check out when your Facebook friends are online and instant message with them from the new Facebook Contacts Tab (located in between the... Read more...
