A collaboration between Google and VMware may remove a huge barrier to chromebook adoption in the enterprise by enabling legacy Windows applications to run on the Chrome OS machines. Chromebooks already offer strong upside for businesses with their low cost, easy management, and inherent OS-level security, and NPD says that chromebooks are already responsible for some 21% of all notebook sales in the commercial channel. However, the inability to run legacy Windows applications has been a difficult problem to overcome for Chrome OS computers. Let’s face it, if you work in a professional setting... Read more...
With the release of VMware View 5.3 vDGA, VMware is deploying NVIDIA’s GRID rendering technology which allows better virtualization of graphically intensive applications in an enterprise environment. We’ve seen NVIDIA demo this technology before, and although it can certainly be used for cloud gaming, GRID offers a server package that can substitute for desktop-side workstation-level graphics. NVIDIA GRID demo “NVIDIA GRID GPU Pass-Through technology makes this possible by allowing a virtual machine running VMware View 5.3 on top of the VMware ESX hypervisor to talk directly to... EMC and VMware have pooled their resources to create Pivotal, a competitor to Amazon and its cloud services dominance, and according to the New York Times, Pivotal is now officially a company. Further details on senior leadership will emerge at Pivotal’s official launch on April 29th. Pivotal is taking on Amazon; if there was any doubt that Amazon needed a competition in the cloud services market, just note how much of the Internet disappears every time Amazon’s AWS experiences... The idea of streaming high-end content to consoles or mobile products has been a topic topic for the last few years. From the OnLive gaming service to the iPhone, multiple companies are scrambling to toss their hat into the ring. Nvidia demo'd its offsite rendering system (dubbed Reality Server) several years ago, and has now partnered with VMWare to support 3D rendering and high-end GPU capabilities when connecting to a system remotely via wireless network. This new initiative could be seen as a Project Reality-type system on a small scale. Nvidia isn't claiming to deliver photo-realistic rendering... Read more...

Mac users represent a small percentage of computer users--about three percent worldwide. But if Mac sales are any indication--up 51 percent in the last year--the number of Mac users are growing rapidly. One of the reasons for this is that all new Macs can also run Windows, allowing users to have access to both operating systems simultaneously via virtualization software. There are several options available for those who want to run Windows on their Macs. Apple's Boot Camp software, which comes with OS X 10.5 (Leopard), sets up a Windows partition so the system can boot directly into the native Windows... Read more...
