News on the Oculus front has been coming in at a rapid pace in recent weeks. We’ve learned that the Oculus Rift will ship to consumers in early 2016, we’ve seen a look at the device in its final form, and we’ve learned about minimum system requirements (OS X and Linux users are SOL at this point). Just a few years ago, 3D TVs were all the rage in the consumer technology space, and now it appears that the new focus is on virtual reality. VR headsets are coming out of the works like the Oculus Rift and the Samsung Gear VR, and now Leap Motion is looking to make the VR experience more immersive with its hand-tracking technology. John Carmack’s former employer, Zenimax, went after the industry veteran last week claiming that important code that he used in helping to build the Oculus Rift VR headset is actually IP owned by Zenimax. The company also stated that it provided VR technology to Oculus VR’s Palmer Luckey and others over the past couple of years in support of the Oculus Rift’s development. Facebook is snapping up Oculus VR, maker of the hotly-anticipated Oculus Rift virtual reality gaming headset. We’ve been following the development of the Oculus Rift for some time, and for as exciting as the device has been in theory, glowing reports from CES about the new Oculus Rift “Crystal Cove” prototype and its improvement on the last prototypes makes the headset downright tantalizing. Looking back, it seems almost adorable that we were all so impressed that the Oculus Rift whipped up $2.4 million in Kickstarter funds. This summer, Oculus raised $16 million from investors led by Spark Capital and Matrix Partners, and the company has now landed an additional $75 million in another round of funding. We feel like we’ve said it recently, but this has been a good year for virtual reality and gaming. There’s no doubt that the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset is cool, but today the team took things a step further by launching the beta version of a gaming marketplace called Oculus Share. Oculus VR describes Oculus Share as “a new platform that lets you self-publish, discover, download, and play the best VR games and experiences out there”, which essentially makes it a playground for developers and early adopters. The Virtuix Omni’s Kickstarter campaign has ended, and Virtuix achieved its goal of over $1.1 million (via 3,000 backers). When Aaron Rasmussen, founder of Protagonist LLC and maker of the Atlas real-space virtual reality machine, says that this is “year zero of virtual reality”, he has a point. Earlier this spring, Valve’s Joe Ludwig announced that the company’s Team Fortress 2 would support the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Now, Valve is expanding that support to Half Life 2, as well. In a post on the Oculus Rift developer forums, Ludwig said that Valve “just shipped” a beta for Half-Life 2 that includes Oculus Rift support, and he added some simple instructions on how to get it.
