If there's one thing that's getting massive amounts of attention here at CES, it's 3D. If there's another, it's USB 3.0. VIA, the company responsible for powering all sorts of lower-end computers, has just launched the world's first USB 3.0 hub controller. What's the big deal? When the FTC sued Intel last week over the company's alleged anti-competitive behaviors, we noted that NVIDIA could be one of the main proponents (and beneficiaries) of such a lawsuit, particularly given the price structure of Intel's Atom products. It's now been alleged that NVIDIA's interest in the FTC's investigation goes beyond Atom's chipset; The New York Times claims the GPU designer may have been working on an x86 processor since 2007. When Pico-ITX hit the market in mid-2008, many figured that it would be quite some time before we saw a replacement shrink any further. Leave it to the folks at VIA to prove us all wrong. Market analysis firm Jon Peddie Research has released its report on graphic processor sales in the third quarter. According to the data, the strong Q2 rebound was no one-time event; GPU sales continued to climb into Q3 and are expected to rise further in Q4. Intel, AMD, SiS, and VIA all saw their market share increase, with AMD leading the pack. Matrox was the sole exception; its share of the GPU market has dropped to 0.0 percent according to JPR.AMD picked up 1.4 percentage points of market share; Intel grew its share by 1.6 percentage points, and NVIDIA managed to lose 4.3 percent market share... There's been a rumor buzzing around, in the wake of NVIDIA's GPU Technical Conference last week, that the company intends to shut down its chipset division. After a bit of sleuthing, Hot Hardware has confirmed that this is not the case. NVIDIA fully intends to continue designing its own core logic, but the scope and purpose of its chipsets will be different going forward than in years past.
