Just a few years ago, virtually no one thought Dell would venture into the smartphone business. With the exception of a few stand-outs, Dell has always been fairly conservative with their products and had never really strayed too far from the PC and its associated peripherals and accessories, although they did make a few slick PDAs back in their heyday. Dell's Venue Pro has been a relative mystery. While the phone was launched months ago along with the other first wave of Windows Phone 7 handsets, actually finding one has been tricky. For one, it's only available on T-Mobile, and both the carrier and Dell have had issues keeping them around. But now, there's something that may take the attention away from their supply channel and back on WP7. Today, Dell announced two new 4G capable devices. First up is the Streak 7, an Android 2.2-powered tablet with connectivity to T-Mobile’s 4G network. The Streak 7 features an NVIDIA Tegra dual-core processor along with a 7-inch multi-touch screen and support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1. In addition to 4G connectivity, the Streak 7 will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Front- and rear-facing cameras are included as well. It may only have a Zune, not an iPhone or iPod, but Microsoft had a great quarter nonetheless.In early numbers from Microsoft prior to its quarterly financial results call to analysts this afternoon, the company reported revenue gains of 27% annually to $13.76 billion, and net income nicely higher by 23% annually to $4.29 billion, in what the company is calling its fastest first quarter of growth since 1999.Could this possibly be a Halo 3 "halo effect?"  Microsoft itself places the credit on Vista.  We did notice there was no credit given to Office.... The latest budget proposal sent to Congress by the President includes a provision to require online re-selling sites like eBay and Amazon  to collect  and report information  about its customers income. Privacy watchdogs are concerned that this will require such sites to store enormous amounts of personal data- including, in many cases, social security numbers.  The biggest concern with the proposed legislation is that it could lead to a vast collection of Social Security numbers and other personal data by a lot of different commercial entities on the Web, said Ari Schwartz, deputy... In their latest press release, Dell talks about their fiscal Q1-2007 revenues, but also drops in some news of their future plans with AMD. According to Dell, their ninth generation servers will use Intel's Woodcrest CPU, and will introduce AMD Opteron CPUs in their multi-processor servers by the end of the year.
