NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 200 series of graphics cards have undergone a significant price reduction since they first debuted.  At the time, NVIDIA flexed its GPU muscle with a high-end, single GPU graphics design that their primary competition (AMD) could only compete with by throwing two GPUs at the problem.  As such, NVIDIA initially priced their flagship GeForce GTX 280 at a significant premium; $649 upon its introduction on launch day.  Would you believe us, if we told you back then, that these cards would be selling for $200 dollars less in only about two months time?  Journey... We earlier wrote that Microsoft's fake OS, Mojave, had birthed its own website.  The idea, a sort of blind taste test among Vista critics, was surprisingly successful with an overwhelming number of respondents liking the OS.  The website was, starting today, designed to show videos of the respondents, and indeed that part of the site has launched. For those new to the Mojave Experiment, it's a focus group effort we initiated a few weeks ago. We interviewed and polled 120 participants in San Francisco, in hopes of better understanding everyday users' perceptions of Windows Vista and seeing... Read more...
If you've kept tabs on recent Linux happenings at all, it has become abundantly clear that Ubuntu Linux has become rather popular and what some might call the "Linux distro of choice".  This trend seems to be pretty obvious to memory manufacture Super Talent, and for a limited time they will bundle a free CD containing the Ubuntu Desktop Edition Linux operating system and the OpenOffice software suite with its line of MasterDrive MX SSDs.  This is obviously a way to add value rather cost efficiently for a high priced product like an SSD.San Jose, California – July 1, 2008 – Super Talent... Starting today, a select few United Airlines customers will be able to plug their iPods and iPhones into their flight's in-flight entertainment (IFE) systems and watch the content from their own devices on the seatback's 15.4-inch displays--and their iPods and iPhones will also charge while doing it. Using IFE systems developed by Panasonic Avionics, "United is the first U.S. carrier to offer iPod and iPhone connectivity to its in-flight entertainment system." As we reported last month, Singapore Airlines was the first air carrier to offer iPod and iPhone connectivity on five of its Airbus A340-500... As many of you are no doubt aware, Intel is planning to officially release a new mainstream chipset in a few weeks, the P45.  From a feature standpoint, the new P45 is somewhat similar to last year's P35.  The P45, however, will have official support for PCI Express 2.0, with a more flexible lane configuration for multi-GPU graphics, and the chipset itself is being manufactured at 65nm as opposed to 90nm.  Using the more advanced process to build the chips should result in lower power consumption and lower operating temperatures as well.  The P45 will also be... Linux is finally starting to make inroads into mainstream computing, as evidenced by the Eee PC and the HP Mini-Note ultraportable laptops. It should come as no surprise that vendors are starting to embrace Linux with open arms, due to its low-cost of entry. VIA Technologies is the latest Linux lover with its launch of the VIA Linux Portal beta Website, intended to provide support to the open source community for development of Linux drivers for VIA-based platforms. A VIA press release stated: "The VIA Linux Portal will initially offer graphics drivers for the VIA CN896 digital media IGP chipset... Read more...
Intel is planning to release the successor the popular P35 chipset in a few weeks, the aptly named P45.  From a feature standpoint, the P35 and P45 are somewhat similar.  But the P45 will have official support for 1,600MHz FSB processors, PCI Express 2.0, and the chipset is being manufactured 65nm as opposed to 90nm, which should being power consumption and heat down a bit.  The P45 will also be paired up with a new ICH10-series southbridge, which offers more SATA connectivity.Asus showed off a few P45-based motherboards at CeBit a while back, but they weren't quite ready for prime... Hans Reiser is a pretty well known Linux programmer. His ReiserFS file system has "...played an integral part in Linux’s core kernel." He parlayed his prominence in the Linux community into his own company, Namesys, and put his wife, Nina, in the Chief Financial Officer slot. He eventually accused his wife of mismanaging his funds, and they separated. Yesterday, a California jury convicted him of murdering her, and he's looking at spending the rest of his life in prison. ... suspicions of Reiser’s involvement in his wife’s disappearance were growing. Shortly after Nina was last seen, Reiser’s Honda... Read more...
As though we need still another reason to hate DRM, here comes one.  Remember the now-defunct MSN Music store?  Hopefully you weren't one of the few to use it.Customers who have purchased music from Microsoft's now-defunct MSN Music store are now facing a decision they never anticipated making: commit to which computers (and OS) they want to authorize forever, or give up access to the music they paid for. Why? Because Microsoft has decided that it's done supporting the service and will be turning off the MSN Music license servers by the end of this summer.MSN Entertainment and Video Services... Many corporations and government bodies tend to hold off purchasing a new Windows operating system until at least the first service pack (SP1) is out the door, and thus it comes as no surprise that Microsoft has been burning the midnight oil to get Vista SP1 ready to ship.  To that end Microsoft has developed a new release candidate (RC) version of the Vista SP1.  After all, the organizations waiting to buy are doing so on the theory that SP1 typically means 'stable enough' to keep their IT staff from jumping out of the windows, so a premature release of SP1 wouldn't go over well.While...
