Recently, we have noticed more and more USB 3.0 products hitting the market, or at least hitting a product roadmap. It definitely took some time for the protocol to gain a lot of industry support, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that USB 2.0 is still largely "good enough" for many tasks. For example, mice and keyboards won't need USB 3.0 right away; the only major product lines that can really take advantage of USB 3.0 are storage and streaming applications, where bandwidth is crucial. But now, the USB-IF is making a pretty big deal about a pretty big milestone. Announced at the Intel... Read more...
Just recently the USB-IF made an announcement that over 100 USB 3.0 devices had become certified, and while we aren't certain if this Kingston drive made the cut, it's definitely on the list. Even if unofficially. Kingston, a major player in the memory and storage business, has just revealed their latest USB thumb drive, and it's a big one. Not physically, but internally. The new DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 is a USB 3.0 hard drive with plenty of space. It's one of the few 64GB thumb drives out that can also offer USB 3.0 transfer rates. It also marks the very first USB 3.0 flash drive for Kingston,... Read more...

The pair also ships with 10GB of Wuala Online Storage for times when you need to remotely... Read more...
Do you hear that noise? That's the sound of Iomega tooting its own horn. Why, you ask? Iomega claims to be moving all of its USB 2.0 portable hard drives over to the new (and much faster) SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface, starting with the Iomega eGo lineup. But that isn't all. Iomega also promises that these newly spec'd drives won't cost a dime more than their slower USB 2.0 brethren. "As a market leader in external hard drive solutions, Iomega is proud to be the first to move towards an all USB 3.0 portable hard drive lineup – and at no extra price premium to our customers," said Jonathan... Sure, Intel isn't quite ready to dive into USB 3.0 territory with its chipsets, but that hasn't stopped computer peripheral makers from launching SuperSpeed devices nonetheless. The latest comes from Samsung, which just unveiled its S2 Portable 3.0. This sleek and spunky 2.5-inch external drive is built for speed, and as such it comes configured with an on-board SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface and a 7200RPM spindle speed. "As digital content continues to evolve from standard definition to HD and now 3D content, we expect the demand for high performance external HDDs to increase, especially among IT... Read more...
It's about time! USB 3.0 is clearly the future of USB. This isn't like the HD DVD / Blu-ray war, where there was actually a battle to be fought before consumers knew which would be moving forward. With USB, we know that 3.0 is the future, but so few machines support it. Even higher-end machines, like the new iMac, MacBook Pro, Dell, HP and Lenovo machines all are stuck with USB 2.0 (for the most part), but iBUYPOWER is breaking the mold. Some computer makers have already decided to add USB 3.0 to select machines, but iBUYPOWER is offering USB 3.0 on all of their desktops at no extra charge. We... Read more...
ATX, ITX, so many platforms to remember! But here's something that's not hard to remember: "mini" means small, so you can rest easy knowing that ZOTAC's newest platform is meant for tiny PCs. The company has just introduced their newest Mini-ITX platform, the H55-ITX WiFi (H55ITX-C-E), which adds USB 3.0 and enhanced power delivery to the fold. This new unit is a refresh of the H55ITX-A-E, and the primary additions here are support for Intel Core i7-800 processors and a revised power delivery system that features passive heatsinks. Carsten Berger, marketing director, ZOTAC International, had this... Read more...
So what if Intel is taking its sweet little time adopting the USB 3.0 spec, let the transition begin. Sure, it sucks that the world's largest chip maker isn't on board yet, but when Intel finally comes around, at least we won't be complaining about a lack of SuperSpeed devices. The latest piece of USB 3.0 hardware to come to market is Super Talent's new Express Drive, an ordinary looking USB thumb drive with extraordinary transfer capabilities. The new drive comes in two capacities, 16GB ($69) and 32GB ($119). In exchange for the pricing premium (compared to USB 2.0 drives), Super Talent promises... Read more...
