“Hold on to your butts!” Nintendo has just announced a new partnership with Universal Parks & Resorts that will see many of your favorite Nintendo characters and games making their way to Universal theme parks. That’s right, you’ll see themed rides featuring childhood (and adulthood) favorites like Mario and Luigi. The joint announcement is rather limited on concrete details, as the two companies are likely still in the very early stages of development, but the main focus of the pairing is to “[create] spectacular, dedicated experiences based on Nintendo’s wildly popular games, characters and... Redbox did something with Universal that it wasn't able to do with Warner Bros., and that's hammer out a multi-year agreement that will continue to make Universal DVDs and Blu-ray discs available for rental nationwide 28 days following their home release. The 28-day window has become somewhat of a standard between movie studios and new age DVD rental services like Redbox and Netflix. "The multi-year agreement between Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Redbox represents a win for consumers, Universal and Redbox," said Galen Smith, senior vice president, Redbox. "Redbox is committed to forging... Read more...
The future of the television remote should be an interesting one to pay attention to. For years now, consumers have relied on basically the same type of TV controller: a long, button-filled remote that changes channels, adjusts the volume and switch inputs. But with more digital content finding its way onto the TV (think Google TV), the remote is in need of an overhaul. For starters, there needs to be an easier way to input text for searching. A standard remote has just 0-9 keys, but no effective way to input letters and symbols. Also, with Netflix and other connected content, the TV is becoming... Read more...
Several major players in the flash/NAND memory market are getting together to make a unified specification that could potentially be used for a new type of memory card. The memory card would probably replace the current standard of SD cards and, since Sony is part of the project, Sony's own proprietary Memory Stick. The list of supporters for the unfinished JEDEC spec are currently: Micron Technology, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Spansion, STMicroelectronics, and Texas Instruments. “The universal popularity of memory cards underscores the importance of this orchestrated... On August 31st, NBC Universal said it would not be renewing its contract with iTunes, after a dispute over pricing.   Later that day, Apple said it would drop NBCU content prior to the fall season - and prior to the expiration of the contract.   NBCU didn't waste any time, as today in a joint announcement NBC Universal and Amazon.com announced NBC television shows will be available on Amazon Unbox. Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) and NBC Universal today announced that a wealth of quality TV content from NBC Universal is now available on Amazon Unbox (http://unbox.amazon.com), Amazon.com's... NBC Universal is the number one supplier of digital video that is distributed on iTunes, with 40% of the downloads, yet it was unable to come to terms with Apple - over what else, money.  Because of this, and perhaps more, it will not be renewing its distribution contract with Apple. The company’s contract to sell more than 1,500 hours of news, sports and entertainment programming on iTunes expires at the end of December. NBC was required to inform Apple by Friday if the contract would not renewed, said Amy Zelvin, spokeswoman for NBC Universal Digital. Although there has always... Read more...
Perhaps signalling another nail in the coffin of DRM, Universal Music Group has announced that it will begin a test program of DRM-free music sales, starting August 21st and lasting through January 31st of next year.  Surprisingly, the songs will not be available through iTunes, which has already been selling DRM-free music from EMI, though for a higher price than normal ($1.29 vs. 99¢). Universal, the world’s biggest music conglomerate, said it would offer albums and songs without the software, known as digital rights management, through existing digital music retail services like RealNetworks... Universal Music Group has notified Apple that it's not renewing its annual contract that allows Apple to offer Universal's  music through Apple's iTunes service. They haven't ended the relationship entirely, as Universal continues to market through iTunes as a sort of tenant at will. It's all about leverage when the pennies get counted. By refusing to enter a long-term deal, Universal may continue to press for more favorable terms from Apple or even explore deals to sell its catalog exclusively through other channels. If Universal were to pull its catalog from iTunes, Mr. Jobs would... Read more...
It seems that general counsel for NBC/Universal is of the opinion that Net Neutrality should take a back seat to issues such as piracy: "Last week NBC/Universal general counsel Rick Cotton argued that law enforcement resources are "misaligned." Cotton says it's wrong to focus on real property theft and potentially deadly crimes when cops could be out enforcing intellectual property laws." People always say that until they get carjacked.Cotton goes on to suggest that ISPs should be required to take proactive measures against pirates using their network.  Assuming that the actions may end up... We know what you're thinking. "it's about time somebody stepped up with this idea".  We couldn't agree more but just think of all those poor unsuspecting cheesy mall vendor cart retailers that might get put out of business with the complete lack of inventory selection.  Can I get an ahmen? "SHANGHAI — China will start to enforce a compulsory universal cell phone charger standard this month. Some see it as a benefit, while others are grumbling that it will add cost and cause hassles in the supply chain. All cell phones designed after June 14 must adopt the universal charger interface,... ThinkComputers.org ponders the idea of a universal virus database. While there are a few websites out their with decent information on a wide range of bugs, there's still no official, central place to log information on all the new types of viruses, and similar software. "In response to the recent article on viruses and after a long time spent fighting the various beasties as they have popped up over the course of the past decade or so, I have come up with a few ideas which I believe might help battle the problem and should be implemented and...
