Spam text messages are an annoyance, and perhaps more so than spam email, as each spam SMS message could cost a subscriber who doesn't have an unlimited messaging plan money. However, in this case a spam text message prevented a suicide bombing, saving hundreds of lives. Russian security forces reported on the incident with a so-called "Black Widow" on Friday. The unnamed woman is thought to be part of the same group that struck Moscow's Domodedovo airport on Monday. She reportedly intended to detonate a suicide belt in a busy area near Red Square on New Year's Eve. It would have been... Read more...
T-Mobile has been sued by mobile marketing firm EZ Texting, one of those firms that provides those short code ad campaigns (text phrase x to number y). EZ Texting alleges that T-Mobile blocked EZ Texting from access to their network because of a client, weedmaps.com (AKA legalmarijuanadispensary.com), whose site provides information on medical marijuana. It should be noted that weedmaps.com, as the suit states, works with those people who live in states where medical marijuana is legal and is thus itself legal. The lawsuit (.PDF) adds that despite working with weedmaps.com for over a year, EZ Texting... Read more...
A recent report showed adults are just as likely as teens to text message while driving. That may not be all that surprising, but a new report is: it shows that half of mothers text message while driving. The survey, conducted by by BOHAN Advertising for its WhyMomsRule.com blog, show that among mothers with text messaging service on their cell phones, 49 percent admit to reading or writing text messages while driving. Not just that, the moms did so with their kids in the car. The survey shows what's wrong with drivers: lack of common sense. Without legislation, or in fact, even with legislation,... Read more...
Times have definitely changed. Instead of sending a check or dropping a few extra bucks in a bucket to contribute to a natural disaster relief effort, U.S. cellphone users are sending text message contributions. In what is being hailed as an unprecedented mobile response to a natural disaster, U.S. cellphone users have donated more than $11 million to Haitian earthquake relief efforts. Wireless carriers such as Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile have waived fees for customers who want to send mobile donations. These carriers are also assuring customers that they are not taking a cut... Read more...
Text messaged every single person on earth already? An Australian website is offering you the chance to send a text message into space. You have until 07:00 GMT Monday, Aug. 24th, 2009 to sign up. The site, HelloFromEarth.net, is accepted SMS style messages (meaning 160 characters or less) which will eventually be sent into space, directed at Gliese 581d, "a planet outside our Solar System which may support life." Expected delivery date is December 2029 give or take a few months, the website says. Let's be honest, as well: they're not really using text messaging technology to send the message.... Read more...
In another "Really? Someone paid to do a study on this?" news, the Michigan State Medical Society announced today that text messaging while driving is dangerous. The news here, however, is exactly how dangerous it is. Apparently, if you text while you drive, you are six times more likely to become distracted and cause an accident. It is, apparently, the biggest distraction while driving, according to some studies. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration puts all cell phone use, including texting, at the top of the list. According to the NHTSA, distracted drivers are responsible for nearly... Finally, your Twitter skills might come in handy.Teimlo, a British mobile phone content provider, wants to hire a marketer. But here's the catch: Job applications are being accepted only via text message (OK, so that's 160 characters instead of Twitter's 140, but think how much more verbose you can be with those extra 20 characters). Text to JOB.The qualifications:If you are qualified, sassy, good with words, dynamite at events, Adobe compatible, have working knowledge of mobile and social media, and are a determined multi-tasker and networker we want to hear from you. You can only send one text.... Read more...
If you need any proof that while some states have such laws, we should probably have a federal law against text messaging while driving (or maybe even some technology), here's a great example. This bus driver, in San Antonio, TX, is trying to text, while driving disabled passengers to their destination. He pulls the phone out, and starts texting, and boom: right into the rear of another car. Fortunately, it was all captured on tape, and the guy has lost his job. Let's hope he doesn't get another one driving anyone anywhere.  While this didn't result in fatalities, the Metrolink train disaster... Read more...
Text messaging may be more popular then making phone calls, but as of the New Year, California drivers have to resort to the old school style of talking to people, at least while driving. In September of 2008 California banned text messaging while driving, effective Jan. 1, 2009. Lest California drivers forget, they still need to use a hands-free setup or headset while behind the wheel, as well. Studies have shown as many as 30% of cell phone users text while driving. And before BlackBerry users get their hopes up, emailing counts as well. A violation will result in a $20 fine for a first offense... Read more...
A British surgeon volunteering in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa used text messaging to help him perform an unfamiliar surgical procedure, saving a teenager's life. David Nott was volunteering for the French medical charity Medicin Sans Frontierescame (A.K.A. Doctors Without Borders) and when he first saw J he knew he was dying, and needed an operation quickly. J's arm had been nearly shot off in a battle between the Congolese army and rebels. This would require a difficult procedure: a forequarter amputation, which Nott was not familiar with. However, his collegaue, Meirion Thomas, is... Read more...
Gasoline costs four bucks, but a gallon of it will get you twenty or thirty miles farther away from your mother-in-law, so it's worth it. Printer ink is famously expensive, going for upwards of $8000 a gallon, but at least you can use it to print a letter to the editor of your newspaper complaining about high gasoline prices. Lots of things are expensive, but we're hard pressed to come up with anything that seems to costs so much for how little you get than a text message. All the major carriers are raising their price for a single text message to an astonishing twenty cents. 140 bytes of data... Read more...
As any readers of the comic strip Zits knows, text messages are the bane of parents of teenagers. However, it's also increased the amount of repetitive stress injuries people get (in their thumbs anyway), created new (and lame) ways of firing people, and even contributed to fatal accidents. At any rate, the SMS or text message celebrated its 15th anniversary earlier this week.Airwide Solutions, which helped pioneer the technology, claims it was the first message to be sent via the mobile GSM airwaves.  15 years ago in the first week of December, Airwide engineer Neil Papworth sent the test...
