When Epic Games demoed the Unreal 4 engine earlier next year, Crytek barely batted an eyelash. The company's new trailer for the upcoming Crysis 3 is evidence of why. The game environments are stunning, and the company swears the footage its showing is drawn from real-world gameplay. The game engine is flexible; it looks as though the PC version will stand out quite a bit from the Xbox and PS3 flavors. Battlefield 3 has become something of a hot item in recent months thanks to the game's incredible visuals and gameplay videos that have left long-time fans of the series salivating. BF3 is the sequel to Battlefield 2 (released back in 2005), and while it's designed for XBox 360, PS3, and PC, the game was built around the PC platform, somewhat of a rarity in the modern age of console-dominated sales. When Crysis 2's DX11 support finally arrived post-launch via several large patches, Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli described the option as a "gift," having apparently forgotten that the game was marketed with DX11 support from day one. The updated visuals and textures may have mollified some PC buyers, but research done by the Tech Report indicates that Crytek's DX11 implementation is highly dubious at best. It's nothing new to see AMD and NVIDIA arguing over benchmarks, but news that came across our desk today put a new twist on a very old battle. A few days ago, NVIDIA contacted us and inquired if we'd be interested in testing HAWX 2's stand-alone benchmark for evaluation, noting that tessellation effects were employed for better terrain realism. We said sure—a number of DX11-enabled games and/or test programs make use of the effect currently.
