Here we thought having a 13-megapixel (MP) rear-facing camera on a mobile device was something special -- pshaw! Zobo, a mobile player in China and other territories, is throwing down the gauntlet with a 5.7-inch phablet that carries a 32MP rear-facing cam -- holy overkill, Batman! Of course, there's more to the quality of a camera than the megapixel account alone, but with a 32MP lens, photo buffs will be able to take some ultra high-resolution photos on-the-go. Zopo announced the device on its Facebook page and shared just a few other details, such as: 5.7-inch phablet Tegra 3 quad-core processor... Read more...
When dual core phones first hit the smartphone market several years ago, Tegra 2 was perfectly positioned across the smartphone and tablet market. Tegra 3 has done extremely well in tablets this past year; Nvidia has won high-profile designs with everyone from Google to Microsoft. In the past few months, however, it's become clear that Tegra 3's quad-core, Cortex-A9 CPUs and older GPU technology wouldn't be able to compete with the latest designs from Apple or Qualcomm. A leaked slide from a Chinese site has shed light on what Team Green plans to answer with and the next-generation SoC is pretty... Read more...
If you've been waiting for the other shoe to drop in the tablet market, today is the day.  We're a few days ahead of Microsoft's Surface and Windows 8 launch on October 26th but the folks at ASUS (and other OEM partners) have been given the green light to let fly with their Windows RT tablet offering today. Microsoft is allowing the wraps to slip off of their Windows RT operating system, a branding otherwise known as Window 8 for ARM-driven devices. And interestingly enough, it looks as if NVIDIA has a solid lock on Windows RT tablet market share, as not only Microsoft's Surface but the majority... Read more...

HTC finally saw fit to formally introduce its One X+ smartphone, which is the successor to the popular One X. The refreshed version looks pretty much identical to the original, but on the inside, it sports upgraded hardware, including a 1.7GHz Tegra 3 processor from NVIDIA and a faster clocked GPU that runs at 520MHz. According to HTC, the One X+ is up to 67 percent faster than the One X. It's also the first to pair a Tegra 3 chip with an LTE radio, at least in the U.S. market, as NVIDIA points out. "It boasts a supercharged version of the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, which features the high-performance,... Read more...
With the computer industry shifting heavily to mobile systems, analysts are keeping a close eye on turnover in the mobile departments of the top companies. It’s one way (though not always an accurate one) to see which way the winds are blowing in the industry. So, it’s a little unsettling for Nvidia watchers to see Mike Rayfield, Nvidia’s mobile business department general manager leaving for a new gig. Rayfield joined Nvidia in 2005 and has been leading Nvidia’s efforts to expand from gaming-friendly GPUs to chips for mobile devices. Nvidia has been making waves with... Read more...
It's not very often you see companies tear into their own products and post a worklog for all to see. For one reason or another, firms typically refrain from disclosing certain component choices, and often times they'll even go to great lengths to make it difficult to open up a product (we're looking squarely at you, Apple). So, it's both odd and delightful that Sony gave its new Xperia Tablet S the teardown treatment in a recent blog post. The Xperia Tablet S is a noticeably thinner and upgraded version of the original. To get into it, you have to remove the top plastic piece that's held together... Read more...
Amazon is awfully proud of its next generation Kindle Fire HD tablet and all the upgrades that went into making it. In particular, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos drew attention to the Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 processor that fuels the Kindle Fire HD's performance, claiming that it offers 50 percent more floating operations per second than NVIDIA's Tegra 3 System-on-Chip (SoC), and 40 percent more memory bandwidth (7.5GB/s versus 5.3GB/s). Plain and simple, Bezos said the OMAP part is faster and a better solution than Tegra 3. NVIDIA Senior Product PR Manager, Igor Stanek, had some things to say about... Read more...
With the Window 8 launch looming, Asus announced two new tablets today that are designed to run the new, touch-centric operating system. Asus is taking the same route with the Vivo Tab that Microsoft is with the Surface: launching Intel-based and RT models at the same time. Asus has released some detail on these tablets prior to this; the device was originally known as the Tablet 810. The Tab RT was known as the Tablet 610. Both models are also following the Surface’s lead by including detachable QWERTY keyboards. You’ll be able to tap and swipe the Super IPS+ displays... Nvidia has released its Q2 earnings for FY2013, and it's good news all around for the graphics manufacturer. While a number of firms had trouble in Q2 thanks to weak European sales and sluggish US demand, Nvidia turned in a net income of $118M on total sales of just over a billion. Nvida's strong quarter comes partly courtesy of Kepler's popularity -- GPU sales were up 15.3% in Q2, at $668M. Revenue was at the top of the company's guidance. The other major factor was the announcement of Google's Nexus 7. Nvidia's Tegra 3 is at the heart of that device, and it gave the company's tablet chipset a... Read more...
NVIDIA has collaborated with Phosphor Games, creators of the iOS title Dark Meadow: The Pact, to bring a special version of the game to Tegra 3 devices. By coincedence, I've been playing the game recently on the iPhone, including during a period when low-resolution graphics were mistakenly being loaded on the iPhone 4S. As a result, I've seen the game's graphics evolve twice--once when the iPhone issue was patched, and now again with Tegra 3 support. Non-Tegra - Left, NVIDIA Tegra 3 Optimized - Right Looking at the screenshots, I like what they've done with the place. Dark Meadow: The Pact takes... Read more...

At the iPad 3 next-gen iPad unveiling this week, Apple flashed up a slide claiming that the iPad 2 was 2x as fast as Nvidia's Tegra 3, while the new iPad would be 4x more powerful than Team Green's best tablet. Nvidia's response, delivered by spokesperson Ken Brown, boils down to "Hey guys, it's flattering to be compared to you, but how about a little data on which tests you ran and how you crunched the numbers?" Nvidia is absolutely right to call Apple out on the meaningless nature of such a comparison, and the company is likely feeling a bit dogpiled given that TI was waving unverified webpage... NVIDIA's Tegra 3 has come alive at Mobile World Congress, first popping into select handsets in HTC's new "One" line of smartphones, and now, it'll be making its way into tablets that use Windows 8. At the trade show today, NVIDIA confirmed today that it is working with Microsoft on a program to distribute Windows 8 test PCs to software developers and device manufacturers powered by the Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processor with 4-Plus-1 architecture. This seeding program enables these parties to create a rich ecosystem of apps and devices for Windows 8 on ARM-based processors. NVIDIA has a long record... Read more...
