When dual core phones first hit the smartphone market several years ago, Tegra 2 was perfectly positioned across the smartphone and tablet market. Tegra 3 has done extremely well in tablets this past year; Nvidia has won high-profile designs with everyone from Google to Microsoft. In the past few months, however, it's become clear that Tegra 3's quad-core, Cortex-A9 CPUs and older GPU technology wouldn't be able to compete with the latest designs from Apple or Qualcomm. A leaked slide from a Chinese site has shed light on what Team Green plans to answer with and the next-generation SoC is pretty... Read more...
Nvidia and ZTE are both giddy as all get-out to unveil the latter's new Mimosa X, purportedly the world's first smartphone to incorporate both an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and the GPU maker's Icera modem, which comes fresh off of NVIDIA's acquisition of Icera in mid-2011. "The ZTE Mimosa X is exciting for a few reasons," said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. "The Mimosa X marks the first time NVIDIA technology powers all the major processors in a single smartphone, and also the first time a premium mobile computing experience is coming to the mainstream smartphone... If you've paid attention to quarterly earnings reports from the major computer OEMs, you've likely noticed that the hard drive shortage this fall had an impact, but not a disastrous one. Companies like Intel reported that manufacturer inventories were substantially affected as company's held off on restocking to see what prices would do, but net sales only fell modestly. The GPU market, on the other hand, seems to have taken a hit. Nvidia has stated that its Q4 results were hurt by the hard drive shortage, something AMD also mentioned in its Q4 results. We didn't break it out initially -- AMD's... Read more...

Nvidia's CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has given his opinion on the Tegra 2 products currently for sale, and he's not particularly pleased. Glancing at the market, it's hard to blame him. Motorola's Xoom—easily the highest-profile Tegra 2 tablet launch thus far—launched without Flash support, a functional microSD slot, or support for Verizon's 4G LTE network; early adopters had to ship the unit back to Motorola for appropriate hardware to be installed. Initial reviews noted that both the apps and operating system were unstable, a problem Google has since blamed on the Xoom's rushed launch. The... Read more...
Nvidia announced today that it's acquiring the fabless semiconductor design firm Icera. The UK-based company specializes in soft modem chipsets for a variety of devices, including laptops, netbooks, tablets, and smartphones. The two companies have a history of cooperation; Icera announced Tegra-compatible wireless chipsets back in 2009. Nvidia's Phil Carmack writes: "This is a significant step forward in NVIDIA’s strategy to be the processor company for the post-PC era... Icera’s baseband and RF technologies span 2G, 3G and 4G networks... Icera’s programmable baseband processor... Read more...
Although a definite price and release date have yet to be announced, the Asus EEE Pad Transformer recently made a brief appearance on BestBuy.com. A short time later, the page was pulled from the site. While the page was available, it showed a price of $399.99, which would make it $100 cheaper than the least expensive iPad 2 and $200 less than the Motorola Xoom, which is currently the only Android 3.0 tablet on the market. Asus announced the EEE Pad Transformer tablet at CES in January. At the time, Asus promised the tablet would make its debut in the spring for a price somewhere between $400 and... Read more...
When Steve Jobs launched the iPad 2 recently, he was even more close-mouthed about its enhancements than usual. With NVIDIA's Tegra 2 starting to ship en masse and tablets on the hot seat for 2011, there's a tremendous amount of interest in the iPad 2's nuts and bolts. Much of that interest has focused on the tablet's new A5 processor and upgrading GPU; detailed information is beginning to emerge. While it's too early in the year to know for certain, it looks as though Samsung's pessimistic evaluation of its new Galaxy tablet might be right on target. Breaking Down the iPad 2 The A5 that powers... Read more...
When Nvidia announced its next-generation Tegra product at the Mobile World Conference, it pulled out all the stops in an effort to impress. The stats themselves were impressive—the chip packs a twelve-core GeForce GPU in with a quad-core ARM CPU—but NV opted to hammer home the point by showing benchmark results. According to Nvidia, Kal-El turned in a score of 11,352 in the embedded processor benchmark Coremark while a T7200 Core 2 Duo (65nm, 2GHz dual-core, 4MB L2, 667MHz FSB) returned a score of just 10,136. If you want to see Nvidia's original video, you can do so here. We weren't... Read more...
NVIDIA took the wraps off its first quad-core Tegra processor design at the Mobile World Conference today and it's a sight to behold. Dubbed Kal-El, the new chip will be capable of outputting 1440P video content and offer 300 DPI on devices with a 10.1" display. NVIDIA is claiming that Kal-El will deliver 5x the performance of Tegra 2 and ship with a 12-core GeForce GPU as well. NVIDIA has posted two different videos of Kal-El in action. In the first, the future Tegra product is being used to browse the 'net as part of a benchmark called NVBench.   In the second video below, Team Green uses... Read more...
The first half of 2011 is shaping up to be all about tablets. Truly, the tablet mania that everyone was so adamant about last year is finally here. While dozens of tablets were announced and shown off at CES in January, most of them won't be arriving until later this month or the March time frame at the earliest. The main reason for the delay is because most manufacturers are stuck waiting for Google to release Android 3.0, or Honeycomb, the first version of Android to be configured specifically for use on tablets. Motorola has the honor of releasing the first Honeycomb device, the Xoom. Of the... Read more...

Dell's Streak 7 tablet is the highly anticipated big brother of Dell's 5-inch tablet, the Streak 5 that came out in September of 2010. The larger Streak 7 goes up against stiff competition with the likes of Samsung's Galaxy Tab though the Streak 7 is retailing slightly lower in the $449 price range without a contract and through T-Mobile on contract for a very competitive $199.99. Regardless, the Streak 7 offers some pluses over the Galaxy Tab, like its 5MP rear-facing camera, but also comes up short in other areas such as its lower resolution display, with an 800x480 native resolution versus the...
