Fully a third of the top dogs on Barron's 30 Most Respected CEOs list released in this week's print edition hail from the tech world.Given how virtually all anyone talks about these days (other than healthcare, but don't expect a discussion of that here) is social media, gadgets and the interwebz, it should be no shock. Nonetheless, a few tech names fell off the list this year: Chase Carey of DirecTV left the company to be the No. 2 man at NewsCorp.; Satoru Iwata of Nintendo due to the Wii's declining fortunes; and Rick Tsai of TSMC, as he's no longer with the semiconductor manufacturer. So we have,... We closed out last year by telling you exactly what we thought were the best offerings to emerge during the final year of the first decade post-Y2K, and you could probably tell (particularly in the netbook sector) that we were somewhat let down by how far we'd come. Or, we should say, how far we haven't come. A new survey by the Zogby recently polled thousands of Americans in order to find out how impressed (or unimpressed) they were with the amount of technological advancements in the past decade. Back in the '80s, we all assumed we'd be whisking to work in flying cars and and the like by the... Read more...

Like many of you who are smart enough to know better, we tend to steer clear of the insanity of the crowd and resist the temptation to go deal shopping on the busiest day of the retail calendar.  Why on earth would you subject yourself to all that needless stress and anxiety anyway, when you can squander your holiday pesos online from the comfort of your armchair?  This is a question a growing number of etailers and retailers are posing as of late, to the extent we now have an official name for the first week day after Black Friday.  This coming Monday, December 1st, has been... If you are a technophile, what's the first thing your wife / friend / relative does when they can't figure out something, or when there's a problem, no matter how small, technology-wise.  Yep, they come to you. Now, yes, most of us here are technophiles, but besides that a new Pew Internet & American Life Project study (.PDF) which focuses on "When Technology Fails," seems to show that youth and gender play a role in how confident a user will be in fixing a tech failure by themselves. And yes, besides the obvious stats they gathered about how many failures may have occurred, Pew Research... Read more...

Google Inc. CEO Eric Schmidt has declined the opportunity to be the "Tech Czar" for the Obama administration. While Schmidt helped campaign for the new President Elect, and has been advising the Obama campaign on technology and energy as part of his 17-member Transition Economic Advisory Board, the prospect of becoming the first Chief Technology Officer of the United states can't entice him away from Google. "I love working at Google and I'm very happy to stay at Google, so the answer is no." said Schmidt. The job, as CTO, will be a large role to fill. Obama hopes the new CTO will be able to "ensure...
